'Stranger Things 5 Volume 1' Ending Explained: 'Will Byers' Has New Superpower, Does 'Hopper' Die?

The wait is over! Stranger Things Season 5 is finally here, and fans have binge-watched volume 1 (episodes 1-4) as soon as they were released on November 27, 2025. If you watched the first part of the series finale and are left with unanswered queries, we have got you covered. Volume 1 of season 5 sets the stage for a high-octane conclusion to the thrilling tale of Hawkins and the Upside Down. It includes a perfect blend of idyll and dystopia, with friendships, love, and sacrifice on one hand and shuddering gore, mind games, and manipulation on the other.

The story of Stranger Things began with Millie Bobby Brown's superhuman character, 'Eleven', but will it end with her, or will the antagonist, 'Henry' aka 'Vecna' (Jamie Campbell Bower), defeat her and take over the world? You will have to watch the complete season 5 to find that out. The first part included several unexpected twists, particularly the focus on 'Holly Wheeler' (Nell Fisher), the little sister of 'Nancy' (Natalia Dyer) and 'Mike' (Finn Wolfhard), and the shift of the spotlight of the series from 'Eleven' to 'Will Byers' (Noah Schnapp).

How does 'Will' unlock his new superpower?

'Will's' power activation is the emotional climax of episode 4 of season 5, titled  Sorcerer. 'Mike' called 'Will' a sorcerer as he feels that the latter could channelise his psychic link to 'Vecna's' hive mind in favour of the Hawkins residents, which is exactly what happens later. After 'Vecna' demeans 'Will' as "weak" and "easily broken," the latter reaches a breaking point. Inspired by 'Robin's' (Maya Hawke) earlier advice about accepting oneself and his own internal struggle with his identity, particularly his s*xuality, 'Will' stops running from his fear and embraces who he is.

'Will' then recalls his positive childhood memories, such as building his hideout, Castle Byers, with his elder brother, 'Jonathan' (Charlie Heaton), and 'Mike' asking him to be friends. The recollection triggers a powerful emotional shift and provides the strength he needs to unlock his new superpower. He uses his link to 'Vecna's' vision and finds out that his friends 'Lucas' (Caleb McLaughlin) and 'Robin' are about to be killed by demogorgans, just like 'Mike'. It was then that 'Will' used telekinetic force to destroy the creatures, causing a nosebleed afterward, much like 'Eleven' experiences when using her powers.

What happens to 'Hopper'? Does he sacrifice himself to save 'Eleven'?

'Hopper' and 'Eleven' infiltrate the military scientist, 'Dr. Kay's' (Linda Hamilton) base in the Upside Down to find out who their 'kryptonite' is and why they hve been hiding the person inside highly-protected closed walls. 'Hopper' and 'Eleven' suspect the individual to be 'Vecna'; however, to their surprise, it turns out to be 'Kali' (Linnea Berthelsen), the girl 'Eleven' once called sister. 'Kali' is locked in as a lab rat and used to create high-pitched sonic sounds to torment people with superpowers like 'Eleven'. While leaving the venue, 'Eleven' is too weak to fight the military men, and to ensure her safety and survival, 'Hopper' decides to use his bomb vest and go down with the enemies. But thankfully, the situation resolves without him having to detonate it, and he survives.

Who is 'Holly's' friend, 'Mr Whatsit'? Where is she now?

'Mr. Whatsit' is the human form cover persona of the powerful, psychic villain 'Vecna', who uses this disguise as a manipulation tactic. The name is inspired by the character 'Mrs. Whatsit' from 'Holly's' favourite novel, A Wrinkle in Time. In the book, 'Mrs. Whatsit' is a good guide, but in Stranger Things, 'Vecna' is an evil guide, luring children into the Upside Down by promising to protect them from monsters in Hawkins. 'Holly', who is now nine or ten years old in the series, will serve an essential role in being the key to 'Max's' (Sadie Sink) escape from the 'Vecna'-created memory maze.

'Holly' meets 'Max' while looking for a way out from a time-suspended version of the Creel House, where she has been captive in Vecna's mind lair. The kidnapped 'Holly' finds the comatose 'Max' in a memory where 'Vecna' is terrified to enter. The duo is currently hatching a plan together to escape from their and return to the real world, back to their friends and families.
