More than two decades have passed since the horrifying 9/11 terror attacks that shook the world. The tragic events of September 2001, which brought down the World Trade Center, left a deep and lasting scar. Those who witnessed the horrors first-hand, still shudder at the memory, haunted by the fear and unpredictability of that day. Among the many untold stories of resilience and survival that emerged over the years, one comes from Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan. The Jawan actor once opened up about his harrowing experience of being stranded in New York with his family during the infamous 9/11 attacks.
An old 2010 interview has resurfaced, where Shah Rukh Khan recalled being in New York during the tragic 9/11 attacks. Speaking to DW News while promoting My Name Is Khan — a film that highlights Islamophobia post-9/11—SRK shared his first-hand experience of witnessing the horrifying events as they unfolded. The actor recalled being in New York on September 11, 2001, along with his wife Gauri Khan, their then-young son, Aryan Khan, and Karan Johar’s mother, Hiroo Johar. He shared:
“My director’s mother (Hiroo), my wife (Gauri), my little son (Aryan), and we were to do an interview for the launch of a film called Asoka. And the rest of the crew was supposed to fly off to Toronto four hours before us.”
SRK recalled being jolted awake that morning by Hiroo Johar, who urged him to look at the news on television. At first, the superstar feared that the plane his film crew had boarded had met with an accident. It was only moments later that he realised the reality was far more devastating than he could have imagined. Shah Rukh said:
“I was woken up… Karan’s mother, Mrs Hiroo, she showed me the television and I thought it’s the plane that our crew is taking, that’s why she is showing that there has been an accident. There was press on the floor below my room, waiting to do the interviews and I was like, ‘What has happened?'”
What followed was a tense and anxious few days amid fear and chaos. With all flights grounded, SRK, along with his family and Hiroo Johar, found themselves stranded in New York. It was only after they requested special permission from the authorities that they were finally able to leave and return to India. In his words:
“I was stuck there for 3-4 days with my family… All the flights and everything was cancelled. So we asked for special permission and requested some people, and they kind of understood… They let the family go because the kids and mothers and everyone… so we got out of it. I think I was deeply affected by it like everyone else was.”
On his work front, Shah Rukh Khan was last seen in the action thriller, Jawan, which was a blockbuster hit across the nation. He is currently gearing up for his mega project, King, which will also be the cinematic debut of his daughter, Suhana Khan.
