Srividya, the pride of South Indian cinema, was a phenomenal actress, known for her beauty and versatility. In a career spanning 40 years, Srividya worked in over 800 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. She was not just a stunning actress, but also a playback singer and a tremendous Bharatanatyam dancer.
Born in a Tamil-speaking family to comedian, Krishnamurthy and Carnatic singer, M.L. Vasanthakumari, Srividya ventured into films at the mere age of 13. Soon after Srividya’s birth, her father fell ill and soon, Srividya had to become the breadwinner of her family. With films like Kumara Sambhavam, Tata Manavadu, Apoorva Raagangal, Chottanikkara Amma, and many others, she proved her mettle as an actress.
Srividya led a successful professional life, but her personal life was a rollercoaster ride, full of heartbreaks, tears, and loneliness. The men who entered her life only gave her misery, leading to her tragic end. Let us delve deeper into Srividya’s lesser-known personal life, which was quite different from her silver screen persona.
In 1975, Srividya got a chance to work with Kamal Haasan in K Balachander's film Apoorva Raangagal. During the shooting of the film, Srividya and Kamal Haasan fell in love with each other. Srividya was a leading name in films, while Kamal was struggling to make his mark in the industry. She wanted to get married, but he wanted to wait for him.
Additionally, Srividya’s mother also asked the couple to wait and settle in their careers before taking the big step of marriage. The actress didn’t want to go against her family and obliged. But it didn’t go well with Kamal, and he called it quits. Their breakup was her first major heartbreak.

During a chat with Kairali TV, she spoke about her breakup with Kamal and revealed how she initially felt like her life was over. In her words:
"I was blank initially; I felt that my life was over. Our families wanted us to get married. I was like a pet to Kamal's father. Slowly, Kamal started becoming a big hero."
Srividya had a relationship with ace filmmaker, Bharathan, who made many films with her as the lead actress. Despite being serious about their relationship, Bharathan and Srividya couldn’t culminate their affair into marriage. Bharathan decided to call it quits and left Srividya in despair.
After two failed relationships, Srividya was petrified by the idea of falling in love. But when George Thomas entered her life, she began to believe in love again. She fell in love with George Thomas, an assistant director of her Malayalam film, Teekkanal. The couple dated for a while and later got married on January 19, 1978.
Srividya even converted and got baptised before her marriage to George. Srividya wanted to settle and have a family, but George didn’t let her do the same, citing financial constraints. Soon, she realised marrying George was a mistake, and within a few months, he blew up all the money owned by the actress.
Srividya’s palatial house was gone, along with Rs. 40 lakhs of cash and gold - all lost in land investments and the failure of two films. He snatched all her properties, money and valuable possessions. Srividya’s life became miserable, and she ended her marriage with a divorce in 1980. The actress then had to take up mother roles to build her life all over again.
While she managed to purchase a property and invest in a music studio, George came back into her life. He filed a false case against her and demanded 25 lakhs, as well as a plot owned by Srividya’s mother, ML Vasanthakumari. Her divorce from George was followed by a long legal battle to settle the financial issues, which she eventually won.
In 2003, Srividya was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and underwent treatment for three years. Two months before her death, she made her will and entrusted her property and fixed deposits to a trust. She also left money for her brother’s children and her servants. Cancer had already spread through her body, and the actress bid adieu to the world on October 19, 2006, at the age of 53.
Srividya only wished well for everyone, yet life was cruel to her and let men like George exploit her.
