Actress Janhvi Kapoor is known for calling a spade a spade. The Dhadak actress, who never minces her words, recently spoke out about the media's voyeuristic nature. She cited an example of her mom, Sridevi’s death, and revealed how the media intervention made things horrible for the family, who couldn’t even mourn their loss privately.
Speaking at the We The Women 2025 event to senior journalist, Barkha Dutt, Janhvi Kapoor talked about the media culture in India and how it had crossed all the lines. In her words:
“The voyeuristic nature of journalism, of media culture, of social media today, has single-handedly contributed to the complete derailment of human morality, and I'm seeing it more and more every day.”

In the same interaction, Janhvi revealed how when she lost her mother, Sridevi, in 2018, the intervention of the media made things really difficult for the family. Revealing how the death became a meme, Janhvi continued:
“It was horrible when I lost my mom. I don't know if you all can imagine what it's like to lose someone that close to you and see it become a meme. I don't even know how to compute or explain it, but it's just gotten worse.”

Going further in the interaction, Janhvi Kapoor revealed that what she and her family went through during the death of her mother couldn’t be verbalised. The actress also revealed that she is too conscious to talk about her mother as she feels people will think she is using Sridevi’s name to grab headlines.

“I always refrain a little bit because I know everyone is opportunistic in nature, and everyone just wants a headline. And I would hate if I ever sounded like I was using such a painful part of my life and my relationship with my mother for a headline, so I think that always holds me back.”
It was on February 24, 2018, when the news of Sridevi’s death surfaced in the media, shocking her fans. Sridevi, who went to Dubai to attend her nephew, Mohit Marwah’s wedding, was found dead in her hotel room’s bathroom by her husband. Sridevi’s death broke her husband, Boney Kapoor, and their kids, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.
