'Squid Game' Is Getting An American Spin-Off By David Fincher, Will Cate Blanchett Star In The Show?

'Squid Game' Is Getting An American Spin-Off By David Fincher, Will Cate Blanchett Star In The Show?

For those of you who just can't get enough of Netflix's fan-favourite show, Squid Game, we are here to give you good news. Owing to the show's popularity, Squid Game has had a successful three-season run. In the final season of the show, we even saw Hollywood actress, Cate Blanchett make a cameo at the end. While this left many fans shocked at the time, it was a very apparent easter egg for the show's new American spin-off series. Yes, you read that right! 

Everything we know about the American version of Squid Game  

The original Squid Game show came from South Korea, and now, after building a huge fan base both nationally and internationally, the show is officially moving to America. In this new spin-off, the show's original creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, will reportedly collaborate with American director, David Fincher. Fincher is known for his outstanding work in the thriller category, with projects like Gone Girl, Zodiac, Panic Room, The Killer, and Fight Club, among others.

According to a Collider report, viewers can expect odes to the South Korean thriller, with the games played by new English players. The filming of the American spin-off will reportedly begin in 2026, with Los Angeles and California as the chosen locations. Coming to the show's cast, Cate Blanchett will reportedly play the role of the salesperson, which was played by actress, Gong Yoo in the original series. Her character in the upcoming Netflix show will serve as the main bridge between the Korean and American versions of the hit show.

Another thing that we do know is that a listing from the Film and Television Industry Alliance website reveals that the new series will be titled Squid Game: America. As per Radio Times, a synopsis of the show is also posted on the website. It reads, “A US version of the Korean hit series, the spin-off is set in the same world, but we get to see how the games are handled in America.” Additionally, while David Fincher has not publicly acknowledged the project, the show's original creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has not only confirmed the show's existence but also shown his support. Regarding the release date, the American version of Squid Game could be released in February 2028.

What are Dong-hyuk's thoughts on Cate Blanchett's role? 

After Squid Game season 3 officially wrapped up and finished airing its final episode on Netflix, the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, in an interview with Variety, revealed what he thought about Cate Blanchett's cameo in the series finale. According to him, all he wanted was to have an impactful ending. He stated:

"All I wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that’s all that was to it. Honestly, I haven’t heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game. I have heard the rumours, of course, though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for season 3."
