Sophie Cunningham's Sister Lashes Out At WNBA After Her Brutal Injury During A Game, 'Pathetic..'

Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham is a famous American professional basketball player. She was playing for the Indiana Fever of the Women's National Basketball Association. On August 17, 2025, Indiana Fever guard, Sophie Cunningham suffered a brutal knee injury during the ongoing match against the Connecticut Sun. After which, her sister, Lindsey Cunningham, slammed the WNBA for not protecting the players.

Later, The Fever confirmed that Sophie Cunningham would not return to the game at Connecticut, due to her fatal injury to her right knee. After this, Sophie's younger sister, Lindsey, publicly lashed out at the Women's National Basketball Association. Taking to her X account, Lindsey slammed the WNBA for focusing on fining players for their comments on poor work and more on hiring officials who are able to protect their athletes. She wrote:

"WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you Sophie."

For the unversed, Lindsey Cunningham, the younger sister of Sophie Cunningham, is a former Missouri player. She is currently serving as the assistant director of development for the Tigers Women's Basketball Team.

Sophie Cunningham suffered a major knee injury during a game against the Connecticut Sun. She got injured in the second quarter of the game when Connecticut guard Bria Hartley decided to basket, fell and accidentally hit Cunningham's leg. Sophie remained on the court with visible pain as she clutched her right knee before help arrived and took her to the locker room. 

The way Sophie fell, she appeared to have hurt her right knee. However, the extent of her injury is not yet known. But Fevers' coach. Stephanie White shared her insight on the terrible injury. She was quoted as saying:

"Especially the way that she fell and how she was holding herself and how much pain she was in, at the time it’s like, ‘crap’ And then you go down there, you see her and it’s like OK, I just want her to calm down and be able to regroup, and then it turns to problem solving, right? How do we put ourselves in a position to win? I think that’s maybe how I survive is going straight to problem solving. But this group, they’re special and I’m thankful for them."

Soon, netizens expressed concern over Sophie's brutal injury. They even went on to criticise the referees' calls. One user wrote, "Sophie was injured because the Suns players wanted it to happen. The refs allowed it to happen. This league can go straight to hell. They'd better get prepared for a huge loss of viewership." Another one commented, "Omg!! What season is this? Hope it’s not a serious injury."

A third one penned, "Yeah, I'm out. No reason left to watch this team anymore, then. Terrible basketball. Healing thoughts to Sophie. She's the only one who seemed to play with any heart anymore."A fourth user commented, "It is obvious she threw herself into Sophie's knee. The WNBA is soooo pathetic, what a disgrace."
