Sonu Nigam Reacts To Controversy Around His Bengaluru Concert Remark, 'Pahalgam Mein Jab..'

Sonu Nigam has been the voice behind some of the most iconic songs in India, including Sandese Aate Hai, Aabhi Mujhe Mein Kahin, Dil Dooba, and more. His soulful voice has often captivated audiences, but on the other hand, the singer's controversies have made him a target of criticism. A similar incident took place a few days ago when the singer was performing at his Bengaluru concert and was asked by a person to sing in Kannada. His words enraged many pro-Kannda groups, who filed a legal case and threatened to ban him. Now, Sonu has shared a video to address the issue.

Sonu Nigam clarifies his controversial remark at the Bengaluru concert

After Sonu Nigam's statement at his Bengaluru concert brought legal trouble and criticism from pro-Kannada groups, the actor recently shared a new video to address the issue. He took to his Instagram handle and shared a video where he shared how the events unfolded at the event and why he responded in such a manner. The singer explained that at the concert, 4 to 5 individuals were shouting aggressive chants of 'Kannada Kannada.' Unlike a soft request, they angrily asked him to sing in Kannada despite being stopped by thousands of people, which led to his comment. He said:

“Un paanchon ko ye batana aur yaad dilaana bohot zaroori tha ki, Pahalgam mein jab pant utaari gayi thi, tab bhaasha nahi puchhi gayi thi.”

Sonu Nigam added that Kannadadigas are lovely people, and his comment shouldn't be taken as a general statement for everyone. He mentioned that such people are found everyone, and irrespective of their background, such a divisive mindset should not be promoted. Explaining how it is critical to stop such people, he said:

"There's nothing like that. Everywhere, there are 4-5 such bad people, no matter which state they're from. But it's very important to remind them that you cannot let them threaten you, to make you sing. The whole world is doing it with love. When I come, I bring a one-hour set of Kannada songs. But for those who provoke others, it's very important to stop them right away, Kyunki ye bawaseer ban jaate hain phir baad mein."

A police complaint was filed against Sonu Nigam for hurting the sentiments of Karnataka's people

Earlier in the day, a new report by India Today stated that several people from the Kannada-speaking community were enraged over Sonu's statement, especially his comparison to the Pahalgam attack. As a result, the Bengaluru district branch of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), a pro-Kannada group, filed a police complaint against Sonu Nigam on May 2, 2025. Accusing the singer of hurting their sentiments and creating a gap between linguistic groups, the statement read:

"This statement is not only insensitive but also dangerous. By linking a simple cultural request to a terrorist incident, Sonu Nigam has portrayed Kannadigas as intolerant, inciting linguistic hatred and threatening communal harmony."
