Sonu Nigam Is In Trouble After His Comment At The Bengaluru Concert, Refused To Sing Kannada Song

The legendary singer, Sonu Nigam is well-known for his soulful singing. The National Award-winning singer has sung in various languages. However, Sonu is facing severe backlash after his comment at a recent concert in Bengaluru. For the uninitiated, the famous singer was performing at East Point College in Bengaluru when a fan requested Sonu to sing a Kannada song very rudely. This behaviour came as a surprise for the singer, and he remarked that the anger seemed similar to the Pahalgam attack. Soon, Sonu's comment went viral, with a pro-Kannada group demanding a complete ban on the playback singer.

Police complaint lodged against Sonu Nigam for hurting sentiments of the Karnataka people

As per the India Today reports, the Kannada-speaking community was outraged by the singer’s comparison of a fan’s request for a Kannada song to the recent Pahalgam attack. In response to the controversy, the Bengaluru district branch of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), a pro-Kannada group, filed a police complaint against Sonu Nigam on May 2, 2025. The group accused the singer of hurting the sentiments of the Kannada community, creating a gap between the linguistic groups present in the state. The complaint against Sonu can be read as:

“This statement is not only insensitive, but also dangerous. By linking a simple cultural request to a terrorist incident, Sonu Nigam has portrayed Kannadigas as intolerant, inciting linguistic hatred and threatening communal harmony.”

Sonu Nigam to face ban from Kannada films after his controversial remark

Following his controversial remarks during the Bengaluru concert, Kannada activists are demanding a ban on the legendary singer from the Kannada films. Rupesh Rajanna, an activist of the 'Yuva Karnataka Vedike', came forward to lodge a formal complaint against Sonu with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). Rupesh and his team of other activists urged the KFCC to bar the singer from the Karnataka film industry, until the latter issues an official apology.

What led to the controversy involving the famous singer, Sonu Nigam?

For the unversed, on April 25, 2025, Sonu Nigam appeared at East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Virgonagar, Bengaluru, for a concert. However, the constant demand from a fan to sing a Kannada song to the singer made Sonu stop his performance mid-way and react to it. Being offended by the fan’s behaviour, Sonu compared the rude request of the fan to the recent Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 innocent lives. This remark sparked controversy in the state, demanding strict action against the legendary singer.

Apart from his controversial remarks, Sonu also mentioned that he has huge respect and love for Karnataka. The singer is known for singing in 32 different languages throughout his career. He also shared that every time he visits different places and gets a request to sing a Kannada song, he loves to keep the fan's request and sing the song. Addressing the same, Sonu said:

“In my career, I have sung in multiple languages but the best songs that I have ever sung is in the Kannada language. Whenever I come to your city, I come with lots of love. We do a lot of shows in a lot of places, but whenever we have shows in Karnataka we come with a lot of respect for you. You have treated me like your family, but I didn’t like when the boy there, who is not even as old as my career, is rudely threatening me to sing in Kannada. I do so many shows across the world where thousands of people gather, and every time I hear even a single person shouting ‘Kannada’, I make sure to sing at least one line in Kannada for them. That's how much I love and respect each and every one of you.”
