Veteran actress, Zeenat Aman, who is known for her unapologetic views on several societal issues, recently penned, “Log kya kahenge” while giving out a piece of important relationship advice. In a post which she shared on her Instagram account a few days ago, she advised couples to live together before they plan to take their relationship to the next level, i.e., marriage. Zeenat revealed that she has given the same advice to her two sons, who had or have been in a live-in relationship. She added in her long note that a person can be the best version of themselves for a few hours, but living together gives a reality check.
However, the veteran actress's point of view did not sit well with many other renowned celebrities in Tinseltown. First, Zeenat’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna co-star, Mumtaz, spoke against her advice. Now, the renowned actor, Mukesh Khanna, popular for his role as ‘Shaktiman’, spoke about Zeenat’s advice on live-in relationships. During a conversation with Dainik Jagran, the actor said that such relationships are not recognised in our culture and further added:

“Live-in relationships are not recognised in our culture and history. It has come from Western civilisation. Zeenat Aman is speaking about the matter, and she has lived her life according to Western civilisation from the very beginning. This is not acceptable in Indian culture. Just imagine if a boy and a girl live with each other like husband and wife before marriage, and they do not get along well, then imagine what will happen to both of them. Those who are saying such things should think before speaking.”

After Mukesh Khanna’s take on Zeenat’s advice went viral on the internet, Soni Razdan took the latter’s side. Alia Bhatt’s mom took to her X (formerly Twitter) and reshared a post featuring the Shaktiman actor’s statement. Soni mocked the actor and said she could not even imagine what would happen if the couple living together, would not get along with each other in the future. In her words:
“Gosh. Can’t imagine what would happen if a couple live together in a ‘live -in’ relationship and don’t get along. The mind boggles.”

Previously, Mumtaz criticised Zeenat’s advice on live-in relations. She said that even if a couple lives together, there is no guarantee that they will have a successful marriage in the future. In an interaction with Zoom, Mumtaz mentioned that Zeenat should be careful with what she posts on her social media. She said that as a society and nation, we are not ready for advice that is contrary to our moral values. The veteran actress further added that she can understand Zeenat’s excitement about gaining huge social media popularity and sounding like a cool aunty, but she must be careful with her advice.
Mumtaz concluded her statement by highlighting that if girls start to adopt the live-in culture, then marriage would become obsolete. She further questioned if someone would marry their son to a girl, who previously was in a living relationship. Moreover, she even took Zeenat’s example to corroborate her point of view on live-in relationships and said:
“If girls adopt the live-in culture, marriage as an institution will become obsolete. Tell me honestly, would you marry your son to a girl whom you know to have been in a live-in relationship? Aap Zeenat ko hi le lo misaal ke taur par…She knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him. Her marriage was a living hell. She should be the last person doling out advice on relationships.”
