Sonam, earlier in an interview with the IANS revealed that Border was one of her favourite movies. This is because Border, directed by J.P. Dutta, has many priceless childhood memories for the actress. However, whose character did Sonam play in Border 2?
Sonam, does not even remember on how many times she watched Border on television while growing up. She feels beyond grateful and truly blessed to be a part of a film like this. For the unversed, Sonam plays the role of Manjit Kaur, who was the wife of Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon. The role of late Flying Officer, Nirmal, has been essayed by Diljit in Border 2.

Sonam further told the publication on how she bagged the role of Manjit Kaur for Border 2. She revealed that Anurag Singh, the filmmaker with whom she worked in Super Singh, 2017 release, had asked her to be a part of Border 2. The director reached her out as both of them have a great working bond and collaborated earlier. Interestingly, both the movies had Diljit, so their association has been quite unique and special.

Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon got martyred at the mere age of 26. He was an Indian Air Force pilot and the only officer to have been a recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. It is India's highest military honour. He received the same for his exemplary bravery shown during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. However, behind the heroic personality of the officer was his wife, Manjit's story of sacrifice, love and loss. Manjit married Flying Officer, Nirmal at a very young age and her life was shaped by the service and sacrifice of the officer.

For the unversed, Border 2 released on January 23, 2026 and has been inspired by true events of the 1971 India Pakistan War. "His wife Manjit was a very simple girl. It was a typical rustic Punjabi wedding near Ludhiana."
Manjit was married to Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon for a short period of time. Their traditional wedding near Ludhiana reflected their simple, rustic and middle-class Punjabi roots. Reportedly, Manjit was a simple and a traditional Punjabi girl hailing from the Sekhon community. Reports also suggest that Manjit was a young war widow and remarriage was a common step in that era due to less social support. Sonam, by playing the role of Manjit, has truly shown the family life of a young officer, whose wife became a widow in a short span of time. It was the personal cost she had to pay due to the war.

For the unversed, Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon and his wife, Manjit, did not have any children. A report by the Times Of India revealed that Manjit later got married in her life for the second time after the demise of her late husband, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon. The officer lost his life, leaving Manjit behind at the mere age of 26. Sonam, to the same publication speaking on her role of Manjit, shared that she was a Punjabi girl from Ambala who married Flying Officer, Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon.
Sonam revealed that Anurag told her that he was the first person who came to her mind for Manjeet. Sonam felt grateful for playing the role of Manjit, and Border 2 was like a dream project for her. The film has been presented by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and has been in association with J.P. Dutta’s J.P. Films. Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta have backed the movie. Sonam, speaking on playing the role of Manjit, shared:
"Director Anurag Singh told me that when he was thinking about the character of Manjeet, my name was the first that came to his mind. That truly means a lot to me. The moment I came to know that work on Border 2 was starting, the film became a dream project for me. Being a part of such a historic and emotional project is special for every artist.”
