Sona Mohapatra Says Aishwarya Rai 'Toned Down' Smartness After Fame, 'Maybe Industry Compels...'

Singer, Sona Mohapatra recently recalled her first encounter with actress and former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai. She voiced her opinions on the changes she noticed in Aishwarya after she acquired fame compared to how she was upon their first meeting. Sona also expressed her thoughts on how being a tad helpless could actually be advantageous in navigating India's complex ecosystem.

Sona Mohapatra says the key to fitting into India's ecosystem lies in being 'thoda bechara'

Sona Mohapatra recently appeared on the Love Lingo podcast hosted by Arsala Qureishi and Jas Sagu. During the candid interaction, Arsala revealed that she had stumbled across something on social media that claimed people should know when to act stupid and that the smartest people knew how to act dumb. Expressing her confusion regarding the same, Arsala asked what that even meant.

Sona then shared her opinions, firmly stating that she prioritised independence and staying true to herself. The singer also opened up about working hard for "18 hours a day" to maintain that independence and keep from falling under anyone's thumb. However, Sona also noted that the trait of helplessness could actually help people navigate India's complex systems. In her words:

"A person would fit into the eco-system much better if you were also thoda bechara and helplessness, in general, is gender-free."

During the conversation, Sona Mohapatra also reflected on the changes she noticed in Aishwarya Rai, whom she first met when she came to Bombay to write her NID exams. The singer noted that Aishwarya had been very smart and even topped in her academics. Sona recounted her first impression of the actress,' painting a picture of beauty with brains as she said:

"I remember the first time I encountered Aishwarya Rai was when I had come to write my NID exams in Bombay, the entrance exams. I had taken a train before the Bombay riots. She was studying architecture, she is older than me. She had a classmate, family friends, very close. She looked gorgeous, she is so smart, spoke very well, top, went on to be who she was."

However, Sona felt that she didn't see the same smartness in Aishwarya's interviews after being crowned Miss World and becoming famous. Talking about how it could be a result of the industry she was in, Sona said:

"There was a period when I remember seeing her in interviews and saying, 'This isn't the Aishwarya I saw'. Because she would have to somehow be very, maybe she was diplomatic in any case, but somehow giggle a lot and giggle a lot and giggle a lot. Maybe that was her phase. But I kept thinking, 'She is a very intelligent woman'. But the industry she is in, maybe compels her to not be just too smart, I might be wrong. She toned down."

Netizens weigh in on the debate, and some draw comparisons with Paris Hilton

A clip of the segment was uploaded to Love Lingo's official Instagram handle, and netizens weighed in on the debate. Many agreed with Sona Mohapatra's opinions, with one user penning, "Yess I have observed this with a lot of actresses. Is it to seek validation from their male audience." Others chimed in, saying that male domination was the reality of the entire country and not just the film industry. Some netizens even drew comparisons to Paris Hilton. For the unversed, the New York socialite capitalised on the attention she received for being a 'dumb blonde' to further her brand and establish multiple successful businesses. She then transitioned from her party girl image to that of a social justice warrior, revealing not only her intelligence but also her genuine concern for the welfare of others.
