Bollywood actor, Saif Ali Khan is the Nawab of Pataudi, and his family owns the Pataudi Palace. The palace was earlier leased out to a hotel chain, and Saif had to buy it back. Now, the Pataudi family uses the iconic property as a vacation home. Moreover, several films have also been shot at the Pataudi Palace, including Ranbir Kapoor starter, Animal. Now, Soha Ali Khan opened up about the ancestral Pataudi Palace, which belongs primarily to her brother, Saif Ali Khan.

Soha Ali Khan reveals Sharmila Tagore keeps a tab on the maintenance cost of the Pataudi Palace

In a conversation with Cyrus Broacha on the YouTube channel, Housing.com, Soha Ali Khan shared that her mother, Sharmila Tagore, maintains a record of the palace’s daily maintenance expenses. She revealed that they prefer to whitewash the palace instead of painting it to save money and they haven’t bought anything new for a long time. In her words:

“My mother sits with her hisaab-kitaab; she knows daily expenditure and monthly expenditure. For example, we whitewash Pataudi, it’s not painted because it’s a lot less expensive. And we haven’t bought anything new for a long time. It’s the architecture of the place that’s most inviting; it’s not the things, it’s not the objects.”

Soha also opened up about the Pataudi Palace’s history and shared that since Saif was born in 1970, he became a prince. But she was born when royal titles were abolished, so she is not an actual princess. Soha added that her grandmother was the Begum of Bhopal, and her grandfather was the Nawab of Pataudi. The actress also mentioned:

“I was born after the privy purses and royal titles were abolished in 1970. My brother was born a prince, because he was born in 1970… With the titles comes a lot of responsibility and bills… My grandmother was the begum of Bhopal and my grandfather was the nawab of Pataudi.”

Soha Ali Khan reveals her grandfather ran out of money 

Soha Ali Khan shared that her grandfather was a competitive sportsman, so her grandmother's father was a little jealous of him. So, her grandfather decided to build the Pataudi Palace to impress him, but the former ran out of money for the marble. Soha added:

“He loved her for many years but was not allowed to marry her… The Pataudi Palace was built to impress his father-in-law… So, if you go to Pataudi, you’ll see there’s a lot of carpets. He ran out of money for the marble, so underneath the carpets there’s a lot of cement.”

Soha Ali Khan reveals she owns the generator room

Soha Ali Khan further revealed that she has to pay maintenance for the generator room because it belongs to her. Talking about it, she said that the palace was leased to Neemrana Hotels and when her parents needed a place to live, the generator room was converted into a 2-BHK house. Soha said:

“The palace was leased to Neemrana Hotels, and when it was, my parents needed a place to live, so the generator room was made into a very nice equivalent of a two-BHK.”
