Sobhita Dhulipala was born in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. Her parents have been a teacher and a marine engineer, respectively. Sobhita always had a stronghold in academics, even before she joined the line of the entertainment industry. She was a teenager when she first began seeing the Harry Potter series at the age of 16. She was living in Vishakhapatnam when her life changed, and she, at the mere age of 16, had decided to come to Mumbai. On her birthday, which is on May 31, 2025, let us take a look back at the time when the actress revealed how she had come to Mumbai and how she did not know Hindi and was shocked seeing Mumbaikars speak.
During an earlier interview with Vogue, Sobhita shared of tossing a coin and decided to come to Mumbai at 16 and not go to Bengaluru or Hyderabad. She had been admitted to one of the top colleges in Mumbai and shared that she did not like to talk a lot in front of everyone. Based on her merit, she got admitted to one of the top colleges of Mumbai and shared:
"I spoke when I was spoken to, otherwise I felt like I was being a nuisance. I would often think to myself, ‘How dare I speak and break someone’s silence?’ I was always amazed when people around me spoke for 20 minutes at a stretch. I was mortally afraid of bloviating."
The actress even confessed to not knowing Hindi when she came to the City Of Dreams, which made it very difficult for her to be around in the city and run from here to there. Dhulipala had taken every setback in her stride. She used to leave her house at 4 am and then go to Churchgate for her 7 am class. She also used to rely on fruit vendors to learn Hindi and overcome the language barrier. In her words:
"I felt like the luckiest girl. After lectures ended, I would take a bus or train back home and disembark at random stops to drink nimbu paani and just explore the place. I’ve spent several hours walking around Bhendi Bazaar, Reay Road, Old Dockyard and Vasai. In Vizag, every place is within 15 minutes of each other, but Bombay just astounded me geographically."
It was in the year 2013 when Sobhita auditioned for Femina Miss India and then went ahead to represent India at the Miss Earth beauty contest. She wanted to do something that did not come naturally to her. She won an array of titles under the Miss Earth pageant and then got a few modelling projects after her big win. Sobhita, after her win saw that models got low pay and were not respected and then gave herself three years to master her craft in the entertainment domain. She then achieved success and quipped:
"I have been financially independent since the age of 20. I learnt things through trial and error, I’m an accountable person and am not easily carried away in these matters, my disciplined roots keep me grounded perhaps. Everyone must be emotionally, physically and financially self-sufficient since during or after college I believe. Irrespective of gender. It’s indispensable. How can one be woke when they’re lazy?"
What are your views on Sobhita Dhulipala not knowing Hindi and on her being financially and emotionally independent at 20?
