'Sister Wives' Fame, Christine Brown Confirms She And Ex-Husband, Kody Are 'Distant' Cousins

The latest episode of Sister Wives came with a shocking revelation. In the recent episode of the TLC series, Christine Brown shared something that left everyone stunned. The TV star revealed that while she is no longer married to Kody Brown, they were still related, the only difference being, now by blood!

Christine Brown reveals she is ex-husband, Kody Brown's distant cousin

During the Sunday episode of TLC's Sister Wives, Christine Brown made a revelation that shocked everyone. For the unversed, Christine, who grew up in a polygamist household, noted she is a distant cousin of Kody, to whom she was spiritually married from 1994 to 2021. During the show, she was seen talking to her current husband, David Woolley, as she explained:

"I knew growing up that I would have to marry a convert because I was literally related to everybody in the church. I did marry a convert, but I was still related to him, too. Yeah, I'm related to Kody. Third cousins once removed are fully legal. Fully. Polygamy is not legal. I’m a third cousin once removed from Kody."

The revelation didn't just shock the viewers; Cristine Brown's husband, David Woolley, was left speechless as well. He only muttered a "wow" upon hearing that his wife was related to her ex-husband. On the other hand, Christine's former sister wife and close friend, Janelle Brown, said it was a running joke in their household that Kody and Christine were family before they tied the knot.

"There was always this joke about [how] they were cousins, but they are so distantly related it’s ridiculous. I think in polygamist families, this kind of stuff happens all the time. It wasn’t the kind of relationship where, like, you saw each other at the family reunion — like, it was a very distant relationship. But they would always joke about being cousins. It just is a small community."

Janelle Brown reflects on her own struggle with the small world of polygamy

Janelle Brown understood where Christine Brown was coming from, as she herself knows firsthand how small the world of polygamy can be due to her own familial connections. For the unversed, Janelle was married to Meri Brown's brother, Adam Barber, before marrying Kody in 1993. They were married for two years. However, that was not the only family crossover Janelle had.

The Sister Wives star's late mother, Sheryl Usher, was spiritually married to Kody's late father, Winn Brown, after meeting through the couple. Sheryl and Winn tied the knot in 1992, one year before Janelle became Kody's second wife. Sheryl and Winn remained in a plural marriage until he died in 2013. Janelle, meanwhile, confirmed her separation from Kody in December 2022. Back in November 2025, Janelle reflected on the same and stated:

"My mom came to save me from the polygamists because no daughter of hers was going to marry some into some crazy cult. And she ended up marrying Kody’s dad."

Meri Brown was not happy with Kody Brown's apology

While Christine's familial connection to Kody Brown came as a surprise to some, it wasn't the only focus of this week’s episode. Kody finally made his way to Cedar City, Utah, to meet up with Meri and finish his self-described ex-wives apology tour. However, the conversation got rocky when the duo brought up their shared past. Meri called Kody out for being 'toxic' to her. Nonetheless, while the conversation with a hug, it seems like things are not cooling down between the duo anytime soon.
