It has been more than 15 days since Today Show co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing and has yet to be found. Amid the intense search, the internet has been filled with countless theories linking her elder son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, to the case. For those unaware, the 84-year-old went missing from her residence at midnight near Tucson, Arizona. After maintaining silence on the online buzz for a long time, Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos has finally broken his silence on Tommaso and his role in the case. 

Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos breaks the silence around Tommaso Cioni's role in the Nancy Guthrie case 

Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos recently sat down for a conversation with Fox News, addressing the internet buzz linking Tommaso Cioni to Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. He acknowledged that he understands it is common that people close to a missing victim come under scrutiny, especially if they were the last to see that person. However, he highlighted that the attention does not mean that the person is certainly guilty in the case. Sharing how it is sensitive and unfair to accuse Tommaso Cioni without any proof, the Sheriff said:

"I understand the pundits are out there. They're gonna say, well, he's the last one to see her alive. We understand that stuff. But, my goodness, you're putting a mark on somebody who could be completely innocent. And more important than that, he's family."

Further, Chris Nanos called out the spread of unverified claims online. He tagged this kind of social commentary without adequate proof as "ugly and mean." At the same time, he requested journalists and the public to be responsible while sharing information. On the other hand, the Sheriff clarified that they are keeping all the possibilities and angles open in the case for investigation. Meanwhile, CNN reported that authorities have no suspects or persons of interest in the case so far. Simultaneously, Chris emphasised that the Guthrie family, including Tommaso, cooperated fully with investigators.

Ashleigh Banfield defends her claims against Tommaso Cioni 

Tommaso Cioni was first linked to his mother-in-law, Nancy Guthrie's missing case after journalist, Ashleigh Banfield discussed it on her true-crime podcast, Drop Dead Serious. She cited an unnamed law enforcement source who reportedly said he could be considered a "prime suspect." However, she had acknowledged that the claims were unverified and described them as "musings". Later, the Pima County Sheriff's Department revealed that they had not officially identified any suspect. Still, Ashleigh is confident about her claim and source. According to Mediaite, defending her reporting on Tommaso Cioni, Ashleigh said:

"I can tell you that my source every day since has stood by that reporting. And that is the thinking as of the day after Mrs Guthrie was reported missing."

Who is Tommaso Cioni, and why is he being linked to Nancy Guthrie's missing case?

Tomasso Cioni is an educator based in Tucson. He has been married to Nancy Guthrie's daughter, Annie Guthrie, since 2006. Tommaso has been linked to the investigation primarily because he was the last person known to have seen Nancy before she disappeared. According to the news reports, he had dropped Nancy off at her home after a family dinner on the night of January 31, 2026. He had confirmed she entered safely before leaving. Since then, investigators have conducted searches and examined vehicles connected to his family as part of routine procedures. However, no proof has been found against him.
