Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has won the hearts of the cine-lovers. For the unversed, the web series is based on a budget of Rs. 200 crores. It is set against the Indian independence movement back in the 1940s, and it features the lives of the tawaifs of the red-light area named Heera Mandi in Lahore. The series features several A-listers from Bollywood, and they actually did proper justice to their roles in the series. However, there was a certain section of the viewers who criticised Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus while pointing at its historical inaccuracy. Amid this, a Pakistani doctor also called out the makers and the plot of Heeramandi. While Bhansali had not paid any attention to the same, recently, Shekhar Suman talked about it.
Shekhar Suman recently sat for an interview with Bollywood Hungama, wherein he was asked about the constant criticism that Heeramandi had faced, based on the alleged historical inaccuracy of it. To this, Shekhar, who played the role of 'Zulfikar Ahmed' in Heeramandi, added that those who criticised the series are 'stupid'. He also stated that people have been creating a fuss, but they might have forgotten that the director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is known for the dystopian sagas. Shekhar added:
"Lot of stupid people are fussing and obsessing over it, talking about it and questioning the historical accuracy and authenticity and chronology, but Bhansali Saab is known for his dystopian sagas.”

In the same interview, Shekhar Suman added that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his craft and his world of imagination. The actor mentioned that SLB's creation and his interpretation should not be compromised because it is his point of view. Shekhar stated that Sanjay Leela Bhansali had not made a documentary on Heeramandi, rather, he had taken a cue from there.
Going forward in the same interview, Shekhar Suman also took a dig at the Pakistani viewers who criticised Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi. The actor mentioned that the Pakistani viewers are actually jealous about the fact that Bhansali made a series on Heera Mandi. He also questioned why these people were even discussing Heeramandi. Shekhar said:
"Padosi mulk ke kuch log hain who are feeling very jealous about the fact ki inhone kyu bana dia? Bhai aap bana lete and why are you even discussing our Heeramandi?”

Soon after it was released, a Pakistani doctor, took to X (Twitter) and criticised Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi. The doctor had shared an old photo of the actual Heera Mandi and wrote that Bhansali should have been well aware of the fact that the courtesans didn't have that much of a financial luxury to afford such jewels and outfits, which had been shown on the series. Later, Vivek Agnihotri lauded the Pakistani doctor for talking about Heera Mandi. He said that he visited the place himself and also talked about how Bollywood often romanticises these courtesans' lives which are full of suffering.
