Sharmin Segal made it to the headlines after she acted in her uncle, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The actress received a lot of flak for her role in the series and got the tags of 'nothingness', 'expressionless', and 'poor' for her acting skills. Sharmin stated that she didn't focus on the negative comments and only took the positivity, but the viewers didn't stop trolling her. As SLB announced the second season of Heeramandi, netizens requested the director not to cast his niece again. Now, the actress revealed some details about working as an assistant director with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
In an interview with News18, Sharmin Segal stated that she could have worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Ram Leela, but at that time, she didn't feel that she would deserve a chance to assist her uncle on such a big project as she knew nothing about filmmaking back then. The actress mentioned that she decided to be in the back sets of Mary Kom and pick up some skills. Talking about the same, Sharmin said:

"I could’ve worked in Ram-Leela but I felt like I didn’t deserve that chance of assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali at that point. I was completely new and I knew nothing about filmmaking. So, I thought of hanging around in the back on the sets of Mary Kom and see what I can pick up, understand and take away and then maybe I could go to assist Sanjay sir with something."

Going forward in the interview, Sharmin Segal stated that she assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Bajirao Mastani, but the first film in which she worked as an assistant director was Mary Kom. The actress recalled that when she was assisting SLB on Mary Kom, he was already making Ram Leela back then, and that's when she had told the director that she would want to work in the films. The actress said that she received a pay cheque of Rs. 7,500 for her first job on the sets of Mary Kom. Sharmin recalled:
"The first film I assisted him on was Bajirao Mastani but the first film I ever assisted was on Mary Kom. And while I was working on Mary Kom, he was shooting for Ram-Leela. I basically told him that I would want to work in films but I know nothing about them. Mary Kom was my first job and I received my first salary while working on it. It was Rs. 7,500."
For those who don't know, Sharmin Segal had a tough childhood. The actress, who was a bit overweight during her teen years, had to face a lot of bully in her school. In an old interview, Sharmin stated that when she was only 17 years old, she had a wish to be a doctor, but something happened which made her interested in acting instead. For those who don't know, Sharmin also worked in Malaal back in 2019, which marked her debut in Bollywood.
