Sharmila Tagore is regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the film industry. The actress made her mark in the film industry with her impeccable portrayal of both modern and traditional films. The actress is all set to make her comeback in the Bengali film industry after 14 years with Suman Gosh's Puratawn.
Chupke Chupke completed fifty years of its release in 2025. The film featured Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore in key roles. Recently, the star actress, Sharmila, opened up about their time on the set of the film. During a conversation with SCREEN, Sharmila recalled that Chupke Chupke was only made possible by the director of the film, Hrishikesh Mukherjee. She revealed that they had only agreed to do the film for the director. Sharmila added that Amitabh and Jaya had very little to do, yet they joined for the director's sake. She stated:
"Hrishida knew exactly what he wanted us actors to do. We just did what he told us. I think all of us - Dharamji, Amitji, Jaya, Om Prakash ji, Asraniji, and Usha Kironji - were there for fun. In fact, Amit and Jaya had very little to do. But they joined in the fun for Hrishida's sake."
In the same conversation, Sharmila Tagore revealed that she, after five decades, still remembered every detail of the film, Chupke Chupke. The actress shared that they had a lot of fun shooting the film. She added that while Hrishikesh Mukherjee's films were not as easy to view, Chupke Chupke was a completely different category. Sharmila recalled that in one of her films, Anupama, she hardly spoke, so when Hrishikesh broughtup the idea of doing a fun film, they all were thrilled to be a part of it. She was quoted as saying:
"When Hrishida offered to do a fun film, we all jumped at it. With comedy one never knows how it lands. I mean, we may be laughing our heads off while shooting, but the audiences may not find it funny at all. There is always that risk. But Hrishida had no such misgivings. He was sure Chupke Chupke would be loved. And he was right! To this day, it is a favourite go-to film, and it is used whenever anyone feels blue."
In the same conversation, Sharmila Tagore recalled working with Dharmendra, with whom she also shares her birthday. The actress also revealed that she would have done Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani with the actor. However, she had to withdraw her name because of health reasons. She reflected on the memories of them working together and stated:
"We've done a lot of films together, not just Hrishida’s Anupama, Satyakam and Chupke Chupe, but also some other big hits in the 1960s like Devar, which is one of my favourite Hindi films of mine, and Mere Humdam Mere Dost which had very good music. We would have done another film together recently (Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani). But I couldn't do the film for health reasons."
Sharmila Tagore also expressed her desire to work more in the comic space. The actress has had a phenomenal run in the industry, and fans can never have enough of her on the screen. She revealed that while she has mostly done serious films in her career, she would like more roles in the comic genre, as that is what she enjoyed the most about Chupke Chupke.
