However, at the same time, she was not inspired by any. Although the model made the statement in a general sense, fans quickly assumed she was shading Selena.

But soon after, Selena Gomez took to her Instagram handle in a now-deleted post and requested her fans to stop the negativity. She penned, "Leave the girl alone". The actress-singer continued that she had whatever she wanted, and it did not affect her life whatsoever. Moreover, Selena asked her fans to become more kind and especially mentioned all the brands that inspire her. The Only Murders in the Building star pointed out that there is a lot of space for everyone and hopes 'it will stop'. But in the whole post, Selena did not exactly mention any person or incident. According to TMZ, the post came after fans started criticizing Hailey's remarks online.

The shared history of tension between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber goes back to 2018, when Justin Bieber married the latter months after ending his on-and-off relationship with Selena. Fans on both sides began to relate the two incidents and interpreted social media activity as a subtle shade against each other. For instance, after Selena Gomez released her emotional breakup anthem Lose You to Love Me in 2019, and in turn, Hailey posted an Instagram Story featuring the song, I'll Kill You.

Hailey Bieber later denied the claim and clarified that it was not directed at Selena, but it reignited their alleged conflict. In 2023, the situation became more grave when fans accused Hailey and Kylie Jenner of mocking Selena's eyebrows in a TikTok video. In October 2022, they made headlines by posing together at the Academy Museum Gala, a viral moment meant to signal that they had moved past the animosity.
