The primary health factors influencing this decision include her Lupus diagnosis. The Calm Down singer has battled Lupus for years, which led to a kidney transplant in 2017. This autoimmune condition and its related complications significantly increase the risks of pregnancy.

Additionally, Selena takes specific medications to manage bipolar disorder. She noted that it could make a safe pregnancy impossible for her during her Rolling Stone interview in 2022. Selena admitted that she didn't "envision" a childbirth through methods like surrogacy; however, she made peace with her medical condition and is open to embracing motherhood through any means. She expressed excitement "for what that journey will look like" as, at the end of the day, she will be able to call the baby her own. She stated:

"It's not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. I'm in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets, for people who are dying to be moms. I'm one of those people...At the end of the day, I don't care. It'll be mine. It'll be my baby."
