Scarpetta was one of the most anticipated series releases of March 2026. The thrilling finale of the show premiered on March 11, 2026, on the OTT giant Amazon Prime Video. For those unaware, Scarpetta is based on Patricia Cornwell's novels and stars Nicole Kidman in the lead role as a forensic pathologist who finds herself in the midst of an investigation into serial murders. Notably, Scarpetta unfolds over two timelines, with a 28-year gap between them. What is interesting is that the murders in both timelines are strongly connected. So how does Scarpetta end, and who is the killer? Keep reading to find out. (Spoilers ahead).
In the present timeline, which takes place in 2026, Chief Medical Examiner ‘Kay Scarpetta' can be seen arriving at a murder scene where she finds the dead body of a woman named ‘Gwen.’ Apparently, the MO of the murders have a lot of similarities with those that took place more than a decade ago, in 1998. It is revealed that the 1998 investigation was also led by ‘Kay.’ In the 8 episodes of Scarpetta, the story unfolds side by side in the 2026 and 1998 timelines, letting viewers in on details about the murders. Additionally, it also reveals all those things which may or may not have gone wrong in the investigation, which is also responsible for making ‘Kay’s’ career.

To mention, it was during the 1998 investigations that ‘Kay’ was assisted by a cop named ‘Pete Marino', who is now married to her sister, ‘Dorothy’. However, the duo have a rather rocky relationship. The original investigations also introduced ‘Kay to an FBI profiler named ‘Benton Wesley.' In the present timeline, ‘Benton’ is married to ‘Kay’ and is in charge of leading the cybercrimes divisions.

On the other hand, ‘Kay’s’ niece, ‘Lucy’ seems to be going through an incredibly difficult time after the passing of her wife, ‘Janet.’ Well, with ‘Lucy’ being a prodigy in computers and technology, she plays an important role in helping solve the case. It is interesting to note that the victim in the present-day timeline has a connection with ‘Matt Peterson,' the husband of a victim from the 1998 timeline. In fact, he was actually a prime suspect during the original investigations.

It is during the penultimate episode that the killer of the 1998 murders is revealed. 'Kay' concludes that the killer is a 911 operator after she analyses some soap samples while also connecting how all the victims had called the same operator at one point. When the young ‘Kay’ finally managed to track down the killer named ‘Roy McCorkle’, she ended up killing him by stabbing him in the neck. When ‘Pete’ arrives on the scene right after her, he ends up shooting ‘Roy’ repeatedly to cover up the fact that ‘Kay’ was there and making it seem like he alone apprehended the killer.

As ‘Kay’ never reveals the truth to her husband, it eventually leads to their breakup in the series finale. Well, after ‘Simon’ tells ‘May’ that he wants a divorce from her, she is left alone in their gigantic remote home. On the other hand, ‘Dorothy’ and ‘Pete’ are finally back on Good terms after reconciling in their Airbnb, ‘Lucy’ can be seen meeting with ‘Matt Patterson,' while ‘Maggie’ decides to expose how her boss was involved in covering up ‘Cammy’s’ murder, which happened on a hiking trail a few months earlier.

This is when the real killer from the 2026 timeline is revealed to the viewers. It was none other than ‘Officer Ryan,' who seemed like a background character when he appeared in Scarpetta's early scenes. He comes to ‘Kay’s’ home, fully prepared to kill her. He explains that he grew a taste for ritualistic murders after he was the first person on the scene of one of the original 1998 killings. What's even more shocking is that his connection to the original killer goes way back.
During a flashback scene, the motives behind ‘Ryan’s’ brutal killings are revealed. Apparently, he was the nephew of the original killer, ‘Roy’ from the 1998 timeline. Not only that, but he has also been a witness to his uncle's killings as a kid. While he tried to copy ‘Roy’s’ MO when he killed ‘Cammy’, ‘Ryan’ admitted that he was unable to do it but also boasted how ‘Gwen’s’ death and mutilation were “perfection”.

One of the most vital clues which helped ‘Kay’ to figure out ‘Ryan’s’ identity was her discovery of the flattened penny on the train tracks. Years back, a young ‘Ryan’ was tasked by his uncle to flatten the penny so that he would remain distracted as ‘Roy’ murdered his victims. After growing up and during the 2026 timeline, ‘Ryan’ conducted the same ritual before his own murders. In the end, when ‘Ryan’ tried to strangle and kill ‘Kay’ in her home, she knocked him down the stairs after beating him with a baseball bat. Soon, she also ends up destroying his skull with the bat as he lay at the foot of the stairs.

What are your thoughts on ‘Officer Ryan' being the real killer in the ending of Scarpetta? Let us know.
