Born to superstars Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, Sanjay has enjoyed an immense fan following since the beginning of his career. It was in 1981, when he made his acting debut in the film, Rocky and became an overnight star. His name was linked with many leading ladies of Bollywood. However, despite his linkups, he married the gorgeous actress, Richa Sharma.
Sanjay had a massive crush on Richa Sharma ever since he saw her pictures in a magazine. After wooing the actress and convincing her parents, Sanjay married Richa in 1987. However, it was not a forever journey for the couple as Richa was diagnosed with brain tumour. In 1996, Richa passed away, leaving Sanjay alone.
While Richa was getting her treatment in New York, where her parents lived, there were many rumours about Sanjay’s linkups with his co-actresses. Sanjay's linkup with his Saajan co-star, Madhuri Dixit had also made it to the headlines. He was also accused of leaving Richa because of her cancer. In a throwback interview to Movie Magazine, Sanjay opened up about the rumours and blamed Richa’s parents for creating problems in their marriage.
The actor revealed that his marriage with Richa was over because of her parent’s constant interference and overprotectiveness towards their daughter. Sanjay also accused Richa’s sister for bridging gap between him and Richa by hurling many accusations at him. Talking about leaving his wife after her cancer diagnosis, Sanjay stated that the paychecks from his movies were also used for Richa’s treatment.
The reports were also rife that Sanjay didn’t wish to be seen with Richa in public, since she started losing her hair. The Khalnayak actor rubbished the reports and stated that he was not the kind of man, who would stop loving his wife if she started losing hair. The actor retorted that he would rather stand by Richa and fly down to the US during her treatment, leaving his professional commitments behind.

In the same interview, the actor admitted that his relationship with Richa had soured because she frequently complained about his work. Sanjay stated that despite being an actress herself, Richa didn’t understand his work schedule. In his words:
“Even before she got cancer, she used to crib a lot ‘I hate India..’ and that kind of shit. ‘I don’t like staying here.. In New York, my father this.. my father that..’ She would keep asking me, ‘Why do you need to work till 10 in the night? I don’t like the pattern of your work. Why can’t you come home at 8’o clock?'” Look, she has been an actress herself. She knows how the industry works.”
After Richa Sharma’s death, Sanjay Dutt married Rhea Pillai, a hostess-turned-model. The couple got divorced in 2008, and he later married Manyata in the same year. Sanjay Dutt has always been the favourite child of controversies. Be it his alleged involvement in drugs and possession of illegal weapons or his multiple affairs, Sanjay has always garnered a lot of limelight. Speaking about his Casanova image, Sanjay had once admitted that he had been in more than one relationship, but was never caught, as he had managed things well.
Despite the fiasco with his first wife, Richa Sharma, Sanjay Dutt maintains a warm bond with their daughter, Trishala Dutt, and often visits her in the US.
