Bollywood has seen its fair share of controversies throughout the years, but only a few of them are as explosive as Sanjay Dutt, son of actor-director, Sunil Dutt. After making his impressive debut with Sunil Dutt’s 1981 film, Rocky, Sanjay seemed destined for greatness. However, his very first film later landed him in controversy, as he got mired in a chaotic relationship drama involving Tina Munim and the legendary actor, Rajesh Khanna.
In his debut film, Rocky, Sanjay Dutt shared the screen with Tina Munim, a leading lady of the time. It didn’t take long before sparks flew between the two young actors in real life, and soon they were romantically involved. But as Sanjay’s life spiralled into chaos, so did their relationship.
In his biography, Sanjay Dutt: The Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy, the actor made startling revelations about his past, including his torrid relationship with Tina Munim. What started as a youthful romance soon became complicated, given Sanjay’s drug addiction and Tina’s alleged growing closeness with superstar, Rajesh Khanna. This left him feeling humiliated and made him the subject of industry gossip. He wrote:
“Take my relationship with Tina for instance. The whole world knew she was fooling around with everybody, making a fool out of me, but I behaved like a blind man and defended her totally. Of course, at the end of it, when our relationship was over and her affair or whatever with Rajesh was brought out in the open, I felt like a fool. I felt used. I knew I was the laughing stock of the industry. Everybody was laughing at me.”
It wasn’t just heartbreak from the relationship that haunted Sanjay, it was anger. After Tina walked out on him, amid rumours of her affair with Rajesh Khanna, Sanjay was consumed by rage and decided to take matters into his own hands. In a fit of fury, he drove to Mehboob Studios where Rajesh Khanna was shooting. Though violence seemed inevitable, Sanjay ultimately held back. Recalling the incident, Sanjay wrote in his biography:
“It had happened soon after Tina had walked out on me. I don’t know what got into me that day. But I was just seized by anger… I couldn’t bear the fact that someone had walked out on me. So in anger, I swore to get Rajesh. I drove to the studios where he was shooting. He came out and sat on a chair. I too pulled up a chair right in front of him and sat down bang opposite. Then I kept staring at him and he got totally psyched. I would have walloped the sh*t out of him. But he just sat still. Lucky for him.”
In a recent interview with ETimes, Gulshan Grover shared how his friendship with Sanjay Dutt made him cautious around Rajesh Khanna on the sets of Avtaar since Khanna was dating Tina Munim at that time. However, to his surprise, Khanna welcomed him warmly and held no grudges despite the tense circumstances. He shared:

“I was a little wary of Rajesh Khanna Ji, but surprisingly, he was very nice to me because I was Sanjay Dutt’s friend. And Tina Munim had started seeing Rajesh Khanna at that time. Sanjay Dutt, in his typical ways, was very vocal about Rajesh Khanna. I hoped that he didn’t hold this against me.”
Amid all the chaotic episodes that Sanju’s life has seen, from addiction to affairs and legal troubles, his vendetta against Rajesh Khanna remains one of the more memorable pasts in the industry.
