Sanjay Dutt's sister and politican, Priya Dutt recently opened up about her views on the film, Sanju. The film was inspired by the life of Priya's brother, Sanjay and was directed by Rajkumar Hirani. While the audience loved the film, the politician shared her disappointment over the biopic.
Priya Dutt sat for a candid conversation with Vickey Lalwani, where she revealed that she felt the biopic didn't fully capture the complexities of her brother, Sanjay Dutt's life. The politician also wondered why the film didn't focus much on their parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt. She added that since a lot could have been done, it can't be called a biopic.
During the conversation, Priya spoke about the biopic, Sanju which featured Ranbir Kapoor as her brother, Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal as 'Sunil Dutt' and Manisha Koirala as 'Nargis Dutt'. Vicky Kaushal also played a pivotal role in the film as a friend of Sanjay Dutt. While the film received immense love, Priya expressed that she has always wondered why the film focused more on a singular friend of her brother and not his family. She also revealed that there was not just one friend but an 'amalgamation of many friends', which made Sanjay's life story. She stated:
"I also felt that the movie didn't do justice to, I think, even my mum in the film, or my father. There is a lot that could have been worked on. There was a lot. Even the relationship between the father and son, the way it was—I think a lot more could have been shown."
During the same conversation, Priya Dutta was asked if she had shared her feelings about the film Sanju with the director, Rajkumar Hirani. The politician revealed that she was tempted but refrained from calling him because she thought that he probably had different concepts in mind. She added that for her it seemed more like a entertainer than a biopic. She was quoted as saying:
"I was tempted... But I think they had a different concept in mind. I didn’t call him. Their focus was just Sanju, of course, which I get that—and his life. It became a bit of a caricature. Maybe they had to amalgamate too many characters. It's not what I expected it to be. I think it was more entertainment... I loved Ranbir Kapoor in it. He played Sanju very well. But yeah, I feel it wasn’t really a biopic. It was a film, very entertaining, and included only certain aspects of his life. The intensity was missing."
Sanjay Dutt's biopic, Sanju gave the audience an insight into the actor's drug addiction, personal affairs, a jail term for possession of arms in connection with the 1993 serial blasts, to his bonds with his parents and friends. The film was released in 2018 and received immense love from the audience. However, many criticised the film for whitewashing Sanjay Dutt's controversial life.
