'Animal' Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga Talks About Making A Mother-Son Story: 'It Will Be Positive'

Indian filmmaker and director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga has gained massive popularity for his mega-hit films, Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and Animal, even though they stirred quite a bit of controversy for their problematic plots. Recently, Sandeep appeared as a guest during a special episode of Indian Idol 15, on the occasion of Animal’s one-year anniversary. He also addressed the popular criticism that he does not give much importance to nurturing and motherly bonds in his films.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga kept a candid stance in addressing questions about his journey into becoming a filmmaker. Talking about his success, the director credited his family, especially his mother, for her support during his struggling days. He told a contestant:

“My family’s support has been crucial. I once challenged my mother that I’d become a director before spending the Rs. 2 lakhs I earned working at McDonald's and Subway while studying film in Sydney.”

Sandeep also opened up about his growing years when he had initially hoped to pursue engineering or medicine. After missing the marks for MBBS, he switched to studying physiotherapy. Soon after, he realised that his true passion lay in storytelling. After that, he pursued film studies in Sydney, taking nearly 6-7 years post-graduation to establish himself as a director.

As the show progressed, at one point, Shreya Ghoshal posed a question to Sandeep regarding his vision and how his family backed his aspirations to pursue filmmaking. To this, Sandeep was all praise for his mother, who funded his education. The film director shared:

“My mother was incredibly supportive. She helped fund my education and even the production of Arjun Reddy when no producers came on board.”

Sandeep addressed the backlash for underplaying mother-son relationships in his films. All three of his popular films were severely criticised for glorifying violence, promoting toxic masculinity and trivialising women. Addressing the aspect of mother-son relationships, Sandeep said:

“I’ve been criticised for not highlighting mothers in my stories. In real life, I’m deeply attached to my mother, and there’s no angst to explore. If I ever write a mother-son story, it will be positive and filled with good vibes.”

The latest episode of Indian Idol 15 celebrated the one-year anniversary of Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. Despite its box office success, the film received mixed reviews, with some critics labelling it as misogynistic. Looking ahead, Sandeep is gearing up to direct Spirit, a cop story starring Prabhas. Rumours suggest that South Korea-based actor, Don Lee might also join the cast.
