Sanae Takaichi, the current Prime Minister of Japan, has created history as she is the first woman to hold this position in the country. As a global leader, PM Takaichi's life has been in the spotlight for quite some time now. Especially, her two marriages to the same person. Sanae Takaichi and her husband, Taku Yamamoto, divorced and then remarried after a few years. As curiosity around Japan's first female PM's personal life rises, here's everything to know about her husband, Taku Yamamoto (now Takaichi).
Taku Yamamoto was also an active member of the Liberal Democratic Party, which is now led by Sanae Takaichi. Before assuming the role of the spouse of the Prime Minister of Japan in 2025, he had served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2021. Yamamoto had also served as the Vice Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries under the Shinzo Abe government. As per reports, Yamamoto's brother used to work as a parliamentary aide under Sanae Takaichi, which consequently made their paths cross.
Around 2004, when both Takaichi and Yamamoto were active members of the LDP, they tied the knot in 2004. They were 43 and 52 years of age, respectively, at the time. Yamamoto was once married and had three children with his ex-wife. However, he and Takaichi do not have any children together. Hence, she ended up adopting her step-children from her husband's previous marriage. And now they have also become grandparents.
After around thirteen years of marriage, Sanae Takaichi and Taku Yamamoto got divorced. Reports suggested that the separation arose from differences in their 'political views and aspirations'. A South China Morning Post report stated that during the 2012 LDP President race, the husband and wife ardently supported different candidates. Yamamoto vouched for Shigeru Ishiba, while Takaichi was a devoted protege of Shinzo Abe. Speculations stated that this might have led to the initial cracks in their marriage, which led to a divorce in 2017. However, a few years later, in 2021, they reconciled and got married again. When PM Takaichi and Yamamoto were first married, she had taken her husband's family name but had continued to use her maiden surname in public.
However, after they remarried in 2021, it was Yamamoto who legally took his wife's surname, so legally his name is Taku Takaichi. For the unversed, in Japan, husband and wife are legally obligated to carry the same family name. Generally, wives are the ones who legally start using their husband's surname in the country due to social norms. However, Taku Yamamoto, the husband taking Sanae Takaichi's family name, was something unheard of and was appreciated by many people.

As per reports, Taku Yamamoto suffered a cerebral infarction in 2025, which resulted in a stroke. As a result, Yamamoto's body is paralysed on the right side. Despite her intense and busy career as a politician and now a global leader, Sanae Takaichi continues to be the primary caregiver of her husband, as per reports. As the spouse of Japan's PM, Yamamoto aspires to support his wife from the sidelines. He also doesn't want PM Takaichi to push herself too hard while juggling his health and her new responsibilities. Yamamoto said to SCMP:
“She worries about my health, so I want to make sure she doesn’t push herself too hard either."
Sanae Takaichi was born in Japan's Nara prefecture on March 7, 1961. Before going down the path of her illustrious political career, she had worked as an author, a broadcaster, and a legal aide. Then she joined the LDP in 1996. Under the Shinzo Abe government, PM Takaichi served as the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications.
