It has been almost 17 years since Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan got married in 2007 and welcomed a daughter, Aaradhya, in 2011. Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai are said to have grown closer during the shoot of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. During an interview, Somy Ali, who was in a relationship with Salman then, shared that the two had grown close during the shoot. She revealed that servants from Salman's residence would inform her of Aishwarya's presence. It was then that she realised that her relationship with Salman needed to end.

It is said that their relationship ended in 2002, and there are various speculations about why it ended. While neither has openly spoken about their dating life or addressed what ended their relationship, Salman once appeared on the popular India TV show, Aap Ki Adalat in 2010, where he talked about Aishwarya's marriage to Abhishek.
In conversation with the show host, Rajat Sharma, Salman Khan answered some of the most significant controversies around him. Rajat also asked Salman about the speculations that he had broken a windowpane at Aishwarya's residence and harmed himself. The actor showed him his hands and said he didn't know what to say. He believes that one's personal life is one's personal matter. Salman added that if he tried to defend this, then it would feel like he was denying that person was a part of his life. He shared:
"Uske baare mein kya kahu sir. I just wish that, you know, I believe in one thing your personal life is your personal life. If I go to defend this, then sir, somewhere someone was a part of your life and you’d be denying it."
In the same conversation, the Bollywood superstar further talked about Aishwarya's marriage to Abhishek Bachchan. Salman said that the best thing he could do in the matter was to stay silent since it had been years since the two parted ways. He added that Aishwarya is now someone's wife, and he is thrilled for her. Salman said he thinks Abhishek is a great man, which is all he could wish for. He shared that once the relationship is over, one doesn't want their partner to be miserable; instead, you want them to be happy. He stated:

"The best thing to do is stay silent. Itne saal beet gaye hai, you know, she is someone’s wife, married into a big family. I am very happy that she is married to Abhishek. I think Abhishek is a great guy. This is the best thing any ex-boyfriend would want. You don’t want, once your friendship is over, you don’t want that person to be miserable without you. You want that person to be really really happy without you. So that, ek selfish reason bhi hogya, there’s no guilt on your head. But it’s the best way to see it. That’s how I feel."
Aishwarya's marriage to Abhishek Bachchan has been under public scrutiny since the rumours around their separation intensified. Their relationship status has been questioned for months now. The speculations started when the two separately attended the Ambani wedding earlier in 2024. Abhishek Bachchan and the Bachchan family also skipped on wishing Aishwarya on her birthday in October 2024.
