Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Case: Innocent Man Loses Marriage Proposal After Being Wrongfully Detained

The Mumbai Police had detained Akash Kanojia from a train in Chattisgarh and framed him as the attacker of Saif Ali Khan. The 31-year-old lost his job; his marriage was cancelled. On January 17, 2024, Kanojia took Jnaneswar Express from Mumbai to Bilaspur. He was going to meet his arranged marriage bride match, but his destiny did not favour the meeting. Kanojia was detained by the Railway Protection Force cops at Durg railway station.

Akash Kanojia's would-be bride cancelled the rishta with him

Mumbai Police had accused Akash of burglary at Saif Ali Khan's Satguru Sharan apartment in Bandra on January 16, 2024. The RPF personnel not only apprehended him, but his pictures were released by television channels and media outlets. During an interview with the Hindustan Times, Akash shared how his grandmother called to tell him that the prospective bride's family cancelled the relationship after seeing his photos on national TV. In his words:

"As a result, the bride’s family cancelled the meeting with me and my employer terminated my services. After what has happened, I am not sure if I will be able to get married in future."

Akash Kanojia worked as a driver

Akash's marriage proposal was rejected, and he does not know about his unseen future. He worked as a driver for a tour operation for Western Railway in Mumbai. On January 17, 2025, a Mumbai Police official called and asked him his whereabouts. He said he was at home, and then the call got disconnected. It was on January 18, 2025, when he boarded the Jnaneswari Express from Mumbai, hoping to visit his ailing grandmother in their native place, Nehla, in Chhattisgarh. He was supposed to change trains in Bilaspur to go to Nehla and was slated to meet the family of his prospective bride.

Mumbai Police wrongfully grilled Akash Kanojia

On January 18, 2025, the Jnaneswari Express arrived at Durg junction, and an RPF took him as he was the alleged suspect. He was taken to Raipur, and then, after 12 hours, Mumbai Police came for further interrogation. Akash said:

“I told the police that I had nothing to do with the attack on Saif Ali Khan and offered to make them speak with my relatives. I also told them that they could check footage from CCTVs installed near my house to clarify their doubts. But they did not pay any heed – instead, they took my photos and circulated them in the media, claiming I was the attacker."

Akash Kanojia also lost his job as a driver

When he was released, he had spoken to his mom, who looked worried as his photo had been shown on all news channels and asked him to return home. Akash had called his employer, who told him not to report to work. Akash said the employer told him:
