There are many inspirational stories in India's history, heaping praise on the brave freedom fighters who paved the way for the nation. However, the man of the hour, who is leading all the attention at the moment is Sadanand Date, a decorated IPS officer. He is the man who not just kept the honour of his coveted title, but also fought with terrorists continuously during the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.

Now, the nation is embroiled with the latest terror strike at Pahalgam where innocent lives were taken in the name of religion. For the unversed, the shocking incident took place in Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam, South Kashmir on April 22, 2025, when a group of terrorists opened fire at the tourists and claimed 26 lives.

As the country witnessed one of the most brutal terror attacks, all eyes are laid on Sadanand Date, the current chief of National Investigation Agency (NIA), whose bravery during the 26/11 terror attack is a testament to his grit and courage. A supercop and one of the brightest stars in the galaxy of IPS officers, Sadanand Date was born into a humble household of Pune. He lost his father at the age of 15 and saw his mother working as a domestic help at people’s home to make ends meet.

Sadanand never let poverty dim his hopes and aspiration. He was a bright student and wanted to achieve something big in his life. To help his mother and finance his education, Sadanand sold newspapers. After completing his post-graduation and PhD in commerce, Sadanand went on to crack the UPSC CSE and joined the IPS.

Sadanand Date nearly lost his life during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks

It was the fateful night of 26/11, which changed the face of Mumbai as the city faced one of the most heinous terror attacks. Sadanand was serving as the Additional Commissioner of Police for Mumbai’s Central Region. While rushing to the Cama hospital, Sadanand stopped at a police station, armed himself and took six officers with him.

When Sadanand tried to enter the building, one of the terrorists, Ajmal Kasab threw grenade at him. The Sub-Inspector, Prakash Morem who accompanied Sadanand was killed on the spot. Sadanand was also injured, along with his other officials, but he sent the officers to seek medical help and continued his operation. He combated with the terrorists for 40 minutes single-handedly when another grenade was thrown at him and its shrapnel pierced his face and legs.

Sadanand’s courage during the attack saved many lives and he received President’s Medal for Gallantry. Over the years, he has held numerous key positions in the Mumbai Police. After the 26/11 attacks, Sadanand established ATC (Mumbai Police Anti-Terrorism Cell). He is currently serving as the Chief of the NIA (National Investigation Agency) and is leading India’s fight against terrorism.

From selling newspapers to donning khaki as an officer, Sadanand Date, who fought with death during the 26/11 attacks is now combating terrorism. His journey is a tale of valour and grit.
