Ruby Dhalla has announced that she has entered the race of becoming the leader of the Liberal Party and the next PM of Canada. For the unversed, Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau gave his resignation on January 6, 2025, amid the ongoing turmoil in the country, and stated that he would serve until the new leader is selected. The process will be going on till March 9, 2025. Well, if Ruby Dhalla wins the race, then she will be the first woman of Indian origin to be elected as Prime Minister of Canada. Ruby Dhalla's early life, childhood, and education, she was raised by a single mother

Ruby Dhalla was born in 1974 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ruby and her brother, Neil were raised by a single mother, who used to work as a bookkeeper and child care worker. Ruby's mom used to make her and her brother watch TV every night before they went to bed, and this has ultimately proved to be the root of Ruby's political career. Talking about her education, Ruby had her studies going on at the University of Winnipeg. In 1995, Ruby acquired a degree in biochemistry with a minor in political science from the University of Winnipeg. Apart from that, she also acquired her Doctorate degree in Chiropractic medicine in 1999.

As Ruby Dhalla's mom would make her watch the news every night when she was at the age of 10, she watched the news about a massacre in the Golden Temple, Amritsar. Being captivated by the news, 10-year-old, Ruby Dhalla sent out a hand-written letter to Indira Gandhi, asking her for a peaceful solution. Well, Indira Gandhi sent her a reply through a personalised letter and invited Ruby Dhalla to India. When Ruby and her family were about to come to India, the assassination of Indira Gandhi took place. Dhalla considers this to be the catalyst of her interest in politics.

When Ruby Dhalla was in junior and senior school, she was made the president there. She took part in a program, wherein she needed to collect 100 Canadian dollars from the then-local MP,  David Walker. Well, David agreed to give her the donation but asked her to be a volunteer for the Liberal Party of Winnipeg. Thus, at the age of 12, Ruby became a volunteer of the Liberal Party, which then intensified her interest in the political world further.

Ruby Dhalla's career: started as a model, became an MP, followed by being a CEO

Ruby Dhalla started her career as a model, and in 1993, she acquired the second position in the Miss India Canada pageant. After that, she pursued a career in acting and worked in India for a few months. She was also seen in a Bollywood-inspired Hindi-language film, Kyon Kis Liye. Talking about her political career, Ruby Dhalla won the House of Commons election from Brampton Springdale in 2004, and with the same, she surely created history as she, along with Conservative leader, Nina Grewal, became the first Sikh female MP to serve in the House of Commons of Canada. She had a consecutive win in 2006 and 2008, and after the same, she lost in 2011 in the federal election by Conservative Parm Gill. In 2015, Ruby decided to take a step back from her political career and not contest the elections.

Controversy around Ruby Dhalla

While Ruby Dhalla is a famous face in the political world, there were several times when she was embroiled in several controversies. First, it was back in 2008, during her trip to India. During that time, two kids were beaten by police for stealing an aide’s purse, and it was Ruby, who was blamed and criticised for being uncaring. Well, she later again found herself around controversy, when she tried to block the sales of the DVDs of her movie, Kyon Kis Liye, stating that her face was morphed into someone else's body for the sales, well, the producer condemned the same. Another controversy was when she reportedly claimed to have hired three foreign caregivers in her family’s home in Mississauga.

Talking about the same, Ruby told CTV News that she didn't enter the same race as she needs a job, but she wants to become the voice of Canadian people irrespective of their status, and she also wants to take Canada to its deserving heights in the international level.
