Rishi Kapoor was the ultimate star of the Indian film industry. His stardom was such that girls would write love letters to him with their blood. With films like Bobby, Khel Khel Mein, Saagar, Prem Rog, Kabhi Kabhie, Karz, Chandni, Rishi Kapoor proved his mettle in acting. Rishi Kapoor’s bond with his audience was tremendous, but he never shared a warm bond with his son, Ranbir Kapoor.
In a throwback interview with Rajeev Masand, Ranbir revealed that as a kid, he was petrified of his father. When Rishi would ask him to eat his vegetables, Ranbir would start crying. He also revealed that when he had made his acting debut, he had dreaded his father, Rishi Kapoor’s reaction.

Rishi Kapoor also shared his emotions about his bond with his son, Ranbir Kapoor. In the late actor’s biography, Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, Rishi had penned about his relationship with Ranbir and how he regretted not being friends with him. In his words:
“The distance that exists between us is similar to the one between my father and me. Ranbir and I see each other through this space but can’t feel each other. At least, I can’t. There are times when I feel I’ve missed out on being a friend to my son.”
In the same excerpt, Rishi mentioned how Ranbir is friends with Neetu Kapoor and not him, he said:
“I was a strict father because I was brought up to believe that’s how a father should be. In one of his interviews, Ranbir said, ‘My father is not a friend. He is a father. I can’t backslap him and joke around with him.’ He is a friend to Neetu but not to me, and that’s something I deeply regret.”

In a throwback interview, Neetu Kapoor revealed how Ranbir Kapoor had reacted when he got to know about Rishi Kapoor’s health condition in 2018. Neetu Kapoor shared that when they got to know about Rishi Kapoor’s cancer, Ranbir Kapoor was travelling. When he came back, she had made him sit and had explained the situation, which had left him teary-eyed. For an hour or so, Ranbir was in a denial state, but later, he composed himself and got down to deal with the situation. The very next day, he had gone to Delhi to pick up his father, and the two then had flown to New York for Rishi Kapoor's treatment.
It was on April 30, 2020, when Rishi Kapoor breathed his last and left for the heavenly abode. The 68-year-old actor was fighting cancer and had freed himself from all the pains, leaving a huge vacuum in the lives of friends, fans and family. Ever since, Rishi Kapoor's death, there has been not a single day when his family has not missed him.
