Reliance Industries Limited was founded by the late legendary business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani in 1958, under the name Dushyant Corporation (DC Group of Companies), as a small venture. In 1981, a 24-year-old Mukesh Ambani joined the company. The youngster set up Reliance Infocomm, which is now known as Reliance Communications Limited. Under Mukesh Ambani's leadership for more than four decades, Reliance Industries Limited has become the 48th most valuable company in the world. It was back in February 2024 when RIL became the first Indian company to enter the Rs. 20 lakh crore club.
Not only this, Mukesh Ambani is also India's richest person with a mammoth net worth of Rs. 948,860 crores. The billionaire business tycoon never misses a chance to lead headlines for spending crores on his family events. He also resides with his family in the world's most expensive private residence, Antilia, which is valued at Rs. 15,000 crores. All these extravagant things about Mukesh Ambani and his wealth often make the headlines. However, people hardly discuss his contributions to society through his philanthropic activities.
Today, we are going to discuss the Reliance Foundation, one of the largest non-profit organisations in the country. Reliance Industries Limited owns the organisation, which was reportedly founded back in 2010 by Mukesh Ambani and his wife, Nita Ambani. The non-profit organisation was previously known as Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation. While Mukesh Ambani has been pulling the strings of Reliance Industries Limited and its numerous subsidiaries, Nita Ambani has been leading the foundation for over a decade.
The Reliance Foundation has been working in various sectors in India, with its primary objective being to promote sustainable growth. Some of the major sectors in which they're working tremendously hard include rural transformation, education, health, urban renewal, sports for development, women's empowerment, disaster management, and preservation of arts, culture, and heritage.
According to the official website of the Reliance Foundation, it has worked in over 55,550 villages and has positively impacted the lives of more than 76 million people across the country. Talking about its health wing, Reliance Foundation has supported 21,200 corneal transplants since 2003 and has offered free treatment to more than 8,000 people who are suffering from HIV. Not only this, but Reliance Foundation's ASMAN is another noteworthy initiative aimed at reducing neonatal and maternal mortality. Not only this, but even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Reliance Foundation provided over 2,000 COVID-19 hospital beds to various parts of the country.

Reliance Foundation's 'Mission COVID Suraksha' was also a major success, receiving widespread applause. The organisation distributed 1.4 crore masks across India in 26 states and Union Territories. In addition, Reliance Foundation distributed 9.5 lakh sanitisers, 5 lakh ORS packets, and 2 lakh gloves in India's 20 states.
Nita Ambani's Reliance Foundation is working at the grassroots level and has positively impacted more than 2.15 crore lives through its various programs and initiatives. Back in 2016, Reliance Foundation kick-started Youth Sports with the aim of laying a strong foundation for sports in India. Reliance Foundation Young Champs is a football academy that was established by Reliance Foundation in 2015 and is now recognised as the best residential football academy in India. Other major activities by Reliance Foundation include the Jr. NBA Program, Olympics Initiatives, and more.
Moving on to the work the Reliance Foundation is doing in the arts, culture and heritage, the non-profit organisation has supported a series of exhibitions celebrating India. In 2016-17, the Reliance Foundation commissioned 100 Pichvai artists from Rajasthan to create 17,000 Pichvai paintings, aiming to preserve one of the world's oldest living art forms. In 2013-14, Reliance Foundation organised a cultural festival in which 50,000 students participated. The annual art event, Drishti Art Competition, was established to raise awareness about eye donation.
Over the years, the Reliance Foundation has received a series of awards for its exceptional work in various sectors across India. The Jr. NBA Program entered the Guinness Book of World Records after more than 3400 NBA students participated in the program. Reliance Foundation won the Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility back in 2021. It's fair to say that Reliance Foundation hardly gets the recognition it deserves for its philanthropic initiatives, but what's inspiring about the organisation is that it continues to work for the welfare of Indians.
