An old interview of Rekha is once again making headlines where the veteran actress was all praise for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. As Aishwarya turned 51 last week on November 1, 2024, let’s take a look at how Rekha, who she calls ‘Rekha Maa’, defended her in front of the media.
Rekha, the legendary actress who has been quite vocal about her admiration for the Bachchan bahu, once again proved herself to be Ash’s wingwoman. Amid the numerous speculations being thrown around, the Times of India highlighted a throwback interview where Rekha fiercely defended Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s genuine talent.

In the old interview, Rekha was found showering praises for Aishwarya, claiming that she was ready to put up a fight for her if ever such a need arose. Describing Aishwarya as ‘our treasure’, Rekha added that the former Miss World 1994 did not need to validate her talent by entering Hollywood. The actress was quoted as saying:
“Among the models I admire, I find Aishwarya is the best. I disagree with the media that she is 'plastic'. I find her very expressive. I will fight for her like a tigress if need be. My heart goes out to Ash. She's been around for so long and yet not been there. That's how it was with me…until I did Umrao... She doesn't need to go to Hollywood to prove herself. She's our own. Why Bride and Prejudice? Who are these people from outside trying to tap Ash's potential? She's our treasure. It's time we acknowledge her.”
This is not the first time that Rekha openly showered Aishwarya for her organic beauty. Back in 2017, the actresses were captured sharing a heartfelt moment at Filmfare’s Glamour and Style Awards. While handing the prestigious award to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rekha jokingly quipped on her beauty, saying:
“Aishwarya’s mother kept seeing my photos when she was pregnant, and this is the result.”
And that’s not all. The veteran actress, who herself is a testament to beauty, elegance and grace, had made Aishwarya’s birthday extra special back in 2018. Just ahead of Ash’s 45th birthday on November 1, 2018, her Rekha ‘Maa’ penned a heartfelt message which was published in Femina. Rekha wrote:
“My Ash, A woman like you who is in harmony with her spirit is like a flowing river, never stagnant. She goes where she wants to without pretence; and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself…You’ve come a long way, baby. Having endured many hurdles, like the phoenix you rise! And I cannot pen down in words how proud I am of that little ‘cool’ moon-faced girl who took my breath away from the very instant I first laid my eyes on her… Aashirwads and duas… Love you. Jeete raho. Rekha Maa.”
