Olympic Power Couple Red Gerard And GF Hailey Langland's Relation, Met When 12, Supports One Another

The 2026 Winter Olympics have captured the attention of the world, and all eyes are on Milano-Cortina. This is because one of the most talked-about stories is about American snowboarder, Red Gerard and his long-time girlfriend, Hailey Langland. Some love stories have never been about podium finishes, but it is about off-slope. Red Gerard is known for winning an Olympic gold medal and has been in a steady relationship with Hailey. Well, for the unversed, Red Gerard and Hailey Langland apart from being an Olympic power couple have much more in common than just sharing the love for the sport. Way before Red and Hailley made their Olympic debuts back at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, their dating history is fascinating. This is because Gerard and Langland had met when they were kids and their relationship had started off on the seed of friendship.

According to a report by PEOPLE, Red Gerard and Hailey Langland met when they were kids and were a part of a similar competitive training group called the Burton snowboarding team. Both had met at the age of 12, when they were attending a snowboarding camp which took place in Mount Hood. Both had been members of the Burton training team, and according to Hailey, their team manager had given Red her number. He started texting her funny messages. Red Gerard and Hailey Langland have always been inseparable. Both stay in California with their dog and travel globally for all their professional events. Red Gerard has always said that the biggest person he has ever leaned on is his girlfriend, for sure. Both of them are Olympic-level snowboarders who have been slaying since 2018. 

Hailey Langland's mother knew her daughter was more than friends with Red Gerard

In an earlier interview with ESPN, Hailey's mother, Michelle, had shared that it was very obvious that her daughter and Red Gerard were more than just friends. She revealed that both of them were meant to be more than just friends. She already knew that Red liked her, was fond of Hailey, and loved to make her laugh. She had revealed of telling her daughter that she would end up dating that guy. This is because, Michelle being Hailey's mom could see that coming. Well, it is interesting to note that both of them lived on opposite sides of the country. Hailey had grown up in California, while Gerard, with his family, stayed in Colorado. Both had developed a close bond and became best friends that also for years. When Hailey was 16, in an interview with the Pyramid Magazine, she shared her love of Red's style on the slopes.

It was in 2022 when Red Gerard and Hailey Langland had competed together at the Beijing Winter Olympics. However, during the 2026 Games, which could have been an Olympic hat-trick for the pair, Hailey had got two tears just months before the Milano Cortina Games had started. She did not have a choice but was forced to sit as she was recovering. However, even in that state, she ensured to go to Italy and cheer for Gerard.  Red Gerard and Hailey Langland, after being friends for like five years, had started dating just weeks after competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Hailey, in an interview with ESPN, had revealed:

“When we were 17, it just sorta happened. I think everyone but me saw it. I’d say, ‘No, we're too young. We're too good of friends.’ But it made sense. Even though we spend every single day together, I don't think we get tired of one another. He's my favorite person to be around. It’s a super cliché story, but it's our story."

Red Gerard has stood by Hailey Langland, as she won't take part in the 2026 Winter Olympics due to injury

When Langland had faced the ACL tear, she had no choice but to sit down as she was injured. She has been competing in the Olympic Games since she was 17, but in 2025, she was in recovery mode for a torn right ACL. In November 2025, she tore her left ACL. She won't be able to snowboard in the 2026 Winter Olympics. In an interview with the Elite Daily, Hailey shared:

"That was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make for myself. But above all, from this whole process, I’ve learned my body is so, so important to me. And to continue to do the things I want to do, I had to take the step and remove myself from the Olympic running, which was obviously super hard. This is the first Olympics I’ve missed since I started competing in the Olympics."
