Bollywood is no stranger to scandals and controversies, but only a few stories from the industry are as shocking as the one recently revealed by veteran actor, Raza Murad. The actor recently recounted an incident from the early years of legendary star Raaj Kumar that landed him into a murder case.
In a recent interview with ANI News, Raza Murad shared intriguing incidents about legendary Bollywood actor Raaj Kumar. Reflecting on the Pakeezah actor’s early days in the industry, Raza Murad recounted a tragic and controversial episode. While Raaj Kumar was at Mumbai’s Juhu Beach with a friend and his girlfriend, a man made an inappropriate remark about the woman. Enraged, Raaj Kumar beat the man so severely that he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Recalling the legal battle that followed, Raza Murad shared:
"Once, Raaj sir was at Juhu beach with a friend and his girlfriend. Someone passed a bad comment about the lady, and Raaj sir got so angry that he beat the man so badly that he died. nd there was a murder case against Raaj sahab. Because my father was a very good friend of his, he would go to every court hearing to support him. It was a long case, but he was acquitted in the end. The whole ordeal took several months.”
Aside from this shocking controversy, Raaj Kumar was known in the industry for his enigmatic persona and an enigmatic sense of self. He was a Kashmiru Pandit who previously worked as a sub-inspector in the police before pursuing acting as a full-time career, eventually earning massive stardom. In the same interview, Raza Murad also shared a personal anecdote with the superstar, highlighting the latter’s larger-than-life presence. He said:
"I remember when we went to his cottage, and I was given a garland to offer him. When I saw him, I thought I was looking at the Qutub Minar - such a tall man. But what he did was incredible. He bent his neck to my level so I could place the garland on him.”
Raaj Kumar was a renowned face in Indian cinema during the Golden Age of Bollywood, with contemporaries such as Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha and Jeetendra. The actor’s on-screen brilliance was as intense as his off-screen persona. His career took off after Mother India (1957), and his unique dialogue delivery made him an unforgettable figure in Indian cinema. Raaj Kumar died in 1996 at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.

Renowned for his deep baritone voice, he has delivered memorable performances in classics like Prem Rog, Henna, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, and Gupt. More recently, he earned widespread acclaim for Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.
