Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons and a legendary industrialist, has proved once again why he was so much more than just a business magnate. He was not only one of the biggest industrialists but also a man with an even bigger heart, who made sure to give back to his people even after leaving this mortal realm. Even in his passing, Mr Tata’s legacy of kindness and gratitude continues to shine through. Take a look at the generous will that the late industrialist left for his longtime staff and his child, his beloved German Shepherd, Tito.
The legendary business tycoon, Ratan Tata, was truly one of a kind, which is why the entire nation stood still on the night of October 9, 2024, as news broke of his passing at the age of 86. Tata’s wealth was estimated at Rs 10,000 crore, the majority of which he endowed for charity purposes to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust. However, a significant portion was also allocated to family, close friends, and long-serving staff members who had been by his side for years.
Ratan Tata was having prolonged health issues due to his progressive health, and he made sure to give back to those who stayed by his side all this time. His will, dated February 23, 2022, stipulated that domestic workers who had served him for over seven years would receive Rs 15 lakh each, with the amount distributed in proportion to their years of service. Additionally, part-time helpers and car cleaners were granted Rs 1 lakh each.
Among the personal beneficiaries, Mr Tata left a whopping Rs 1 crore for his cook, Rajan Shaw, which also included a loan waiver of Rs 51 lakh. His butler, Subbaiah Konar, was given Rs 66 lakh, including a Rs 36-lakh loan waiver. His secretary, Delnaz Gilder, received Rs 10 lakh, while his driver, Raju Leon, was also given Rs 1.5 lakh in addition to a Rs 18-lakh loan waiver. For his young friend and executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, Ratan Tata wrote off his complete education loan worth Rs 1 crore for an MBA at Cornell University.
Beyond his human beneficiaries, Tata’s will also reflected his deep love for animals. He shared a deep bond he shared with his German Shepherd, Tito. Tata allotted Rs 12 lakh for Tito’s upkeep to ensure his beloved dog was taken good care of. Shaw, his cook, was entrusted with Tito’s care.

Tata’s will also included detailed instructions regarding his wardrobe. His collection of luxury clothing, which included brands such as Brooks Brothers, Hermès, and Brioni, was to be donated to NGOs for distribution among the underprivileged. In another generous act, he waived off an Rs 23.7-lakh loan given to his neighbor, Jake Malite, for an MBA at Warwick Business School.
Ratan Tata’s will is a testament to his humility, generosity, and devotion to others. Even in death, he ensured that his legacy would be defined by compassion and gratitude, a reflection of the remarkable life he led!
