Ranveer Singh is leading the headlines currently after apologising for mocking a Daiva in the film Kantara and calling it a ‘ghost’. It was during the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where Ranveer Singh publicly made the remark. Soon after he video went viral, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) filed a formal grievance against Bollywood star Ranveer Singh, demanding an apology.
As the heat on Ranveer’s public mockery intensified, the actor took to his Instagram handle and issued a public apology. Penning his respect for every culture, Ranveer apologised for hurting religious sentiments. His note can be read as:
“My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. “I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body - that shot was amazing."

Though Rishabh Shetty was seen laughing at Ranveer’s statement, many social media users were not pleased with Ranveer’s act. While some called out Ranveer for disrespecting the Tulu community, others pointed out the mischaracterisation of daivas, which are regarded as forest deities. The incident garnered a huge discussion on social media platforms.

Soon after the incident, HJS representatives Pramod Tuyekar and Dilip Shetye presented a memorandum to Panaji police station sub-inspector Sahin Shetye. A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on how the actor hurt Hindu religious sentiments and may cause public resentment. They demanded Ranveer’s apology and stated:
