Randeep Hooda is a powerhouse of talent in the Hindi film industry. He is a versatile actor who can ace complex and intense roles. The actor always portrayed all his roles with complete conviction, whether it was his raw performance in Sarabjit, intensity in Highway, or shocking transformation with Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. However, his struggle from anonymity to fame has brought a fair share of disappointments. In a recent interview, Randeep Hooda shared how his film, Highway's' makers had hurt him, after they removed him from its promotions.
Randeep Hooda has been riding high on the success of his latest release, Sunny Deol starrer, Jaat. He recently sat down for an interview with Shubhankar Mishra and recalled the rough patch in his career during 2014. Despite being the lead, he revealed that he felt bad after being removed from the Highway's promotional activities. At the same time, the actor highlighted that being a part of the film's promotion could have been beneficial for his career. In his words:
"It felt bad."
At the same time, he mentioned that he was confused after Ranbir Kapoor, who wasn't a part of the film, participated in the film's promotions. For those unaware, Ranbir did a highly publicised interview related to the film in 2014 with Alia and Imtiaz for a truck journey covered by an English channel in the film city. They discussed the film throughout the journey, and Randeep's absence left fans curious. The latter said:
“Maine bhi voh dekha aur mujhe bhi samajh nahi aaya Ranbir Kapoor ka iss picture se kya lena dena hai. Maybe that's where their love story began. I offer them my best wishes. If this film brought them together, I'm truly happy for them."
When Highway was promoted before its release, Alia and director, Imtiaz Ali were at the forefront. But, after its release, Randeep was also brought into the team. In his interview, the actor shared the reason behind it and mentioned that the filmmakers made a promotional strategy to keep Alia at the centre. However, later, when people realised his role was significant, he was brought in. Randeep explained:
“Last ke 1-2 din shayad traction nahi pakad rahi thi, toh mujhe leke gaye the. Shayad unki strategy shuru se thi ki Alia ke around karenge — waise bhi woh film female exploitation pe thi. Par jab film logon tak pahuchi, unko laga ki agar Mahabir Bhati nahi hota uss picture mein, toh picture waise nahi pakad paati.”
Imtiaz Ali's Highway starred Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt, which takes its name from a TV series, Rishtey's episode, which was written and directed by the filmmaker. The film is based on a young girl who gets kidnapped and taken away, but finds her freedom during the journey. The film was released on February 21, 2014, and received positive reviews. It became a breakthrough in Randeep and Alia's career. At the same time, Highway emerged as a moderate commercial success at the box office.
