Ram Gopal Varma, popularly known as RGV, is one of the most renowned filmmakers in Indian cinema. The ace filmmaker, who enjoys a huge fanbase, has given some incredible movies to Hindi and Telugu cinema. The National Film Award winner’s legendary films include Shool, Prema Katha, Rangeela, Satya, Company, Bhoot, Sarkar, Sarkar Raj, The Attacks of 26/11 and many others.
Apart from films, Ram Gopal Varma is also known for his critical views on multiple topics. The filmmaker, who is known for his path-breaking films, is also popular for his obsession with actress Sridevi. Yes, you read that right. Today, let us read on to know about RGV’s love for Sridevi and why he hated Boney Kapoor.
Ram Gopal Varma was a film fanatic and would never miss watching a film. Even during his college days, he would stand in long lines to buy a ticket for every movie that starred Sridevi in it. When Ram Gopal Varma was making his debut film, Shiva, he would walk from Nagarjuna’s office in Chennai and walk towards the place where Sridevi used to live.
For hours, he would stare at Sridevi’s house. In his memoir Guns and Thighs, Ram Gopal Varma talked about staring at Sridevi’s house for hours in the hope of getting a glimpse of her. In his words:
“I would just stand and stare at her house. I just couldn’t believe that the goddess of beauty lived in that stupid-looking house. I say stupid because I believed that no brick-and-mortar house deserved to hold that ethereal beauty called SRIDEVI. I used to desperately hope to catch a glimpse of her as she went in or out of her house, but sadly no such thing ever happened.”
Ram Gopal Varma’s debut film, Shiva, became a hit, and he got a chance to work with Sridevi in his second film, Kshana Kshanam. When the director went to Sridevi’s house to meet her, he was mesmerised by her beauty. The film, Kshana Kshanam was RGV’s love letter for Sridevi. Penning his emotions about the same, he wrote:

“The way Sridevi had sat in front of me in the candlelight got imprinted in my mind like an exquisite painting, and with her image completely filling both my mind and heart, I started writing Kshana Kshanam. I wrote Kshana Kshanam with the one and only purpose of impressing Sridevi. Kshana Kshanam was my love letter to her.”
Ram Gopal Varma’s obsession with Sridevi was beyond words. After Kshana Kshanam, RGV worked with Sridevi in the film, Govindha Govindha, in which he witnessed the actress dealing with the personal tragedy of losing her father and her mother’s mental illness. Soon, the news of Sridevi’s marriage to Boney Kapoor broke his heart.
However, Sridevi’s marriage to Boney Kapoor is not the reason why RGV started hating Boney. It was the way Sridevi succumbed to the household chores at Boney’s home that made him hate Boney. Recalling an incident of seeing Sridevi serving tea in Boney’s kitchen, he penned:
“The woman who was the object of lust of the entire nation’s male population, was suddenly left all
alone in the world till Boney Kapoor stepped in to fill the vaccum. So, straight from her superstardom, magazine covers and her dazzling beauty on the silver screen, I saw her in Boney’s house serving tea like an ordinary housewife. I hated Boney Kapoor for bringing that angel down from heaven to such an ordinary, humdrum existence.”
For Ram Gopal Varma, Sridevi was an angel, and he always thought her to be God’s best creation. When Sridevi passed away in 2018, Ram Gopal Varma was devasted and penned his grief on social media, questioning whether the actress led a happy life.
