Rajasthan Man's Cross-Border Wedding With Pakistani Bride Halted After Attari Border Closure

The Pahalgam terror attack has left the entire nation devastated and reeling at the brutal assassination of 26 innocent tourists, who were targeted just for being Hindu. The horror unfolded in the tranquil valley of Kashmir, where families went in search of peace and pilgrimage, but were instead faced with the horrific tragedy. As India comes to terms with the situation, its ripple effects are being felt not only on diplomatic fronts but also in the personal lives of citizens, including one heartbroken groom from Rajasthan, India and his Pakistani bride.

Rajasthan man’s cross-border wedding brought to a halt

Shaitan Singh, a resident of Rajasthan, was preparing to travel to Pakistan this week to marry his fiancee. He had planned to cross the Attari-Wagah border with his baraat and unite with his bride in a cross-border wedding celebration. However, just days before the joyous occasion, the Pahalgam attack of April 22, 2025, brought the celebrations to a sudden halt.

Reacting to the brutal attack from Pakistani terrorists, the Indian government shut down the Attari Integrated Check Post with immediate effect. This was one of the several responses aimed at Pakistan, and the country is being accused of sheltering the perpetrators behind the gruesome massacre.

What Shaitan Singh said about his postponed wedding

With the Attari border closed, Rajasthan-based Shaitan Singh’s dream wedding is now indefinitely postponed. The groom-to-be talked about the same in an interview with ANI, visibly disheartened at the heartbreaking turn of events. With the border closed for an indefinite period, Shaitan Singh has no other option but to wait. He said:

“What the terrorists have done is wrong...We are not being allowed to go (to Pakistan) as the border is closed... Let us see what will happen now.”

Shaitan Singh’s brother, Surinder Singh, also talked to the media and expressed how the unfortunate attack affected the lives of several innocent citizens of India, including their own family, some of whom are stranded on the other side of the border. He was quoted as saying:

“I was going to Pakistan today for my brother's wedding, but it will be postponed now. My grandmother and her four sons stay in Pakistan, and her one son stays in India. The attack on tourists (in Pahalgam) was very wrong.”

India’s five-point action plan in light of the Pahalgam terror

The brutal Pahalgam attack has led to a geopolitical fallout. The Indian government has taken strict measures in light of the incident and issued a five-point action plan, which included the immediate closure of the Attari-Wagah border. The other measures announced by the government so far included the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, cancellation of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals, expulsion of Pakistani military advisors, and reduction of diplomatic staff in Islamabad. Security has been intensified across Jammu and Kashmir. Military presence on the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch National Highway has increased, with checkpoints active 24/7.
