Prince Andrew relinquished his royal titles, including the Duke of York, after discussing with King Charles and other members of the Royal Family. In his official statement, he revealed that he made this big decision because of his constant mention in the Epstein scandal. He also added that the continued allegations about him distract from the work of King Charles and other Royal Family members.
After Prince Andrew dropped his royal title of Duke of York, his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, also lost her title of Duchess of York. Along with this prestigious title, Prince Andrew also holds the titles of Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, as well as his HRH style. After giving up on all these major titles and honours, Andrew's appearances will be reduced significantly in the Royal Family's future events. Even if he makes an appearance in public in the future, his role will be limited to ensure he remains entirely private.
Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, lost the titles of Duke and Duchess of York, but their daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, will continue to hold the title of 'Princess'. Andrew's shocking decision to give away his titles and honours was revealed days after The Guardian published excerpts from late Virginia Giuffre's memoir, Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice, which is set to be released on October 21, 2025.
For the uninitiated, Virginia Giuffre was an American advocate who raised her voice against Jeffrey Epstein and his sex trafficking activities, as she was one of his victims. Giuffre also accused Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, of allegedly trafficking her to Prince Andrew when she was 17, after which the former Duke of York reportedly sexually assaulted her on three occasions. She filed a lawsuit in 2021, and it was settled outside court in February 2022. Now, ahead of the release of her memoir, the matter was once again getting a lot of eyeballs, which is probably why Andrew gave away his titles and honours.
Moving on to Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's tragic love story, they grew up together as the latter's father, Major Ronald Ferguson, was King Charles' polo manager. They crossed paths as adults at Royal Ascot in 1985, which sparked a courtship that eventually led to their engagement on February 19, 1986. Andrew and Sarah got married on July 23, 1986, and welcomed their first daughter, Princess Beatrice, in 1988, followed by Princess Eugenie in 1990. The first four years of their marriage were highly troublesome for Sarah because they were strained by Andrew's demanding naval career.

The newly-married couple spent about 40 days together in the early years of their marriage, including the time when she was pregnant with their daughters. As time passed, Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew started drifting apart, and in 1989, she reportedly came close to millionaire, Steve Wyatt, when she was expecting her second daughter. The alleged couple's affair broke the headlines in January 1992, when Sarah's daughter, Beatrice, was spotted hanging out with Wyatt. In March 1992, Andrew and Sarah reportedly announced their separation. In August 1992, Sara was spotted vacationing with her advisor, John Bryan, in the South of France.
Some pictures from their vacation were published by a publication in August 1992, showing John Bryan allegedly kissing and sucking Sarah Ferguson's feet. Although everyone was aware of Prince Andrew and Sarah's separation, the intimate pictures still came as a shock. The incident brought immense embarrassment to the Royal Family, and it led to Sarah and Bryan's formal ostracisation.
However, Andrew Lownie, in her memoir, The Duchess of York Uncensored, mentioned that Prince Andrew also faced allegations of being involved with over a dozen women before his first wedding anniversary with Sarah Ferguson. The public labelled Sarah and Andrew's marriage as a "Royal Infidelity". The ex-couple's divorce was finalised in 1996, and both moved in different directions. Despite everything that had happened between them, Sarah and Prince Andrew have been living together to co-parent their daughters. By 2023, King Charles decided to give Sarah a second chance and allowed her to join the Royal family for Christmas for the first time since 1992.
Fast forward to 2025, Sarah's old email to Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced on the internet in which she apologised to the child trafficking monster for criticising him publicly. After several UK charities cut ties with Sarah, her spokesperson stated that she wrote the statement because Epstein threatened her. Now that Prince Andrew has given up his royal titles, he and Sarah are once again in the headlines for all these infamous controversies that have happened in the last 39 years of their marriage.
