The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League commenced on March 22, 2025, and the audience has been at the edge of their seats with the high-tension matches. However, within the initial days of the season, a controversy erupted, which put the Punjab Kings' skipper and his co-batsman for the match, Sashank Singh on the stand.
In the game between Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings on March 25, 2025, Punjab King's skipper, Shreyas Iyer, left everyone stunned after his century was controversially left stranded three runs short in his debut for the franchise. While his teammate, Shashank Singh, became the face of criticism for allegedly robbing Shreyas of the three runs, the team's co-owner has now shared her opinion on the same. Preity Zinta took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle on March 26, 2025 and weighed in on her team's captain's performance.
Preity Zinta took to her X handle and shared a video from the match. Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans on the back of Shreyas Iyer's innings. The batter also won the Player of the Match. The co-owner congratulated her team for the win and addressed the controversial miss as well. She commended the skipper for showing class, leadership and aggression. She also shared how she loved how the team played as a unit and also shared a few words to express appreciation for the contribution of other key players, including Shahsank. She stated:

Shreyas Iyer’s 97 was pure class sometimes, it’s not just the numbers but the impact that counts! Kudos to the team for a solid performance & big shoutout to the rising stars. #SaddaPunjab #GTvsPBSK."
A user commented, "Well said @realpreityzinta. His 97 is way better than a hundred. Ting!" Another penned, "Cleary there is a difference between 97 off 47 and 112 off 60. The former is better for T20. A comprehensive team effort by PBKS. Shreyas's innings provided that cushion to bowlers who could breathe easily." A comment read, "It was a brilliant knock from the captain Shreyas."

Shreyas Iyer's contribution to the match was undeniable. He was batting on 97 when the final over of Punjab's innings began. Shashank Singh belted 23 runs off the over but did not give Iyer the strike to complete his century. This angered many fans as they thought that Shashank had done this intentionally. However, the batter later revealed that Iyer had instructed him to go all out and 'not worry about his hundred'.
