Not many know that Prabhu Deva first got married way back in 1995 but that marriage ended in a divorce. It was ugly owing to his alleged relationship with a famous South actress. So, are you curious to know the details of Prabhu Deva’s love life? Then, read on!
Born on April 3, 1973, in Mysore to South Indian movie choreographer Mugur Sundar, Prabhu was a child prodigy. Because dancing was in his genes, he started showing his interest at a very early age. Soon, he was training for Indian classical and even Western dance styles. Prabhu started off with small roles like background dancer in many South Indian films and soon became popular as one of the leading choreographers. Eventually, he even turned to produce and direct films. In the year 2009, he made his Hindi directorial debut with Salman Khan starrer, Wanted.
Prabhu Deva got married to Ramlath in 1995. Not much is known or documented about their first meeting but because she was also a classical dancer, perhaps dancing played cupid between them, and probably it was a love marriage. Ramlath was a Muslim and hence, she turned to Hinduism in order to marry Prabhu. She changed her name to Latha post-marriage. The couple had three children but unfortunately, the eldest son, Vishal, died of cancer in 2008.

Sometime in 2009, rumours of Prabhu Deva dating the Tamil actress, Nayanthara surfaced on tabloids and papers. He had directed her in the Tamil film, Villu. The two never accepted or denied their alleged relationship and on being asked at press meetings, both would either dodge or laugh it off. Soon, the rumours fizzled out and everybody thought it was simply a cooked-up gossip. But, in September 2010, Prabhu Deva himself admitted to being in love with Nayanthara. He revealed to a media portal that Nayanthara is really special to him and that he would love to marry her. It was learnt then that the two had been dating for two years already. Naturally, this statement reached Prabhu Deva’s wife, Latha’s ears.
Prabhu had been meaning to file for a divorce from Latha for quite some time and after making his love for Nayanthara public, he approached his wife for it. But Latha did not budge and remained solid on her grounds, objecting to her husband’s extra-marital affair. She even filed a petition at a court alleging that because of his affair with Nayanthara, Prabhu was not helping to run their family financially. In fact, in October 2010, Latha filed a second petition at a Chennai court asking the justice to restrict Prabhu from marrying Nayanthara. She even threatened hunger strikes if her petitions go unheard. This whole fiasco led to many women organisations come out on the roads, burning effigies of Nayanthara and saying that she had brought disrepute to the Tamil culture.

In October 2010, the court issued summons to Prabhu Deva and Nayanthara, and in December, the date of the final settling was scheduled to be June 10, 2011. When the D-day arrived, neither of the parties appeared before the court, only to push the date to July 10, 2011. But on July 2, 2010 Prabhu and Latha went to the court to avoid any fuss and finally, they ended their marriage of 16 years. Latha got the custody of the sons and Prabhu got visiting rights.

By the time of Prabhu and Latha’s divorce, Nayanthara had completely quit films and was heavily dependent on her lover for her expenses. It said that even after quitting films, she did not put an end to her lavish lifestyle and that ended her up in huge sums of debt.
After Prabhu’s divorce, he and Nayanthara started living in Mumbai, in a live-in relationship. The fact that he would often go to Chennai to meet his two sons did not go well with Nayanthara and in fact, Prabhu would sometimes lie to her that he is going for shoots and would actually go to Chennai. Another issue that crept up between the two was the fact that according to Nayanthara, Prabhu would often promise a wedding, but would back off at the last moment. Finally, in 2012, just a year later, they released a statement of their break-up. Talking once to the Times of India about her break up, Nayanthara was quoted as saying:
“That's too personal to get into'a break-up for anyone is the most difficult phase in their life. When you have to go away from someone you love or vice-versa, whatever the reason, it really shatters your life. But how you deal with it is important. I can't get into how I dealt with it but I have to if I want to move on and live my life”.
