Pooja Bedi, the daughter of veteran actor, Kabir Bedi and late dancer, Protima Bedi, has carved her own niche in the entertainment world. She ruled the industry during the '90s. Pooja is well known for the 1992 film, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, and her advertisement for the KamaSutra condom campaign. However, she had to quit acting after her marriage to Farhan Furniturewala. In a recent conversation, Pooja revealed the reason behind the decision to step down from acting after her marriage in 1994.
Pooja Bedi was at the peak of her career when she bid adieu to acting. She took this decision after her marriage to Farhan Furniturewala in 1994. In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Pooja explained why she made that decision. The Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar actress shared that as her husband, Farhan, was born in a conservative Muslim family, there was no way that his family would accept a daughter-in-law going to the set. She later expressed that for Farhan’s family, it would have been quite hard to accept her as a 's**y' bahu. In her words:
"I got married to Farhan, who came from a conservative Muslim family, and there was no way on earth his family was going to accept a bahu (daughter-in-law) going to the set. I don't think there was any way they were going to accept a bahu still working in films. Back then, once you got married, you stopped doing films. You were off the shelf, unlike today. Also, a 's*xy bahu' or a 's*x-symbol bahu' would have been a lot for them to handle."
In the same interview, Pooja shared that the decision to quit acting was made consciously. Pooja explained that she didn’t want to make Farhan’s family uncomfortable. Fearing that her acting profession might cause discomfort to her in-laws, she left the industry. She was quoted as saying:
"I thought about it, and I was like, 'If I'm going to do something, I want to do it well and with full respect. I don't want to walk into a family and make people there uncomfortable. So, either don't get married because it's going to create chaos, or let yourself fit into that world and see what it's all about.'"
Pooja added that after she made the decision to quit films, she returned all the signing amounts. The Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar star mentioned that she even rejected the KamaSutra ad campaign when it came up for renewal. She explained that although the company offered her eight times more money than what she was paid earlier, she turned it down. Recalling the moment, Pooja said:
"I then returned all the signing amounts for all the films that I'd committed to; there were quite a few. My Kamasutra ad campaign had come up for renewal, and I had to reject that as well, even though I was offered about eight times the amount that they paid me originally."
