For the unversed, Payal Kapadia began to draft her film, All We Imagine as Light, a long ago as a project as a student at Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India. Sharing revelations about the same, Payal, in an interview with The Indian Express, revealed that during that time, her grandmom had a fall, and the lady was bedridden. Payal mentioned that her grandmom then hired a nurse to help her with the difficulties. And after spending time with her, Payal acquired an interest in the lives of these women who come from different places in Mumbai for work. Payal said:
"At that time, my grandmother had a big fall and the normally feisty lady was bound to her bed. She hired a nurse to help her in this difficult state as she lived alone, except when I stayed with her. Spending time with them, I got interested in these women who come from different states to Mumbai to work."
