Hera Pheri's 'Baburao Ganpatrao Apte' is one of the most iconic characters from the history of Hindi cinema. Played by Paresh Rawal, the dhoti-clad landlord's innocence, Maharashtrian speaking style and quirky humour have been admired by one and all. He lighted up the screen in the iconic Hera Pheri franchise, which has been a precious memory in the minds of millennials and Gen Z. Over the years, the character has become a cult alongside Akshay's 'Raju' and Suniel Shetty's 'Shyam'. The second instalment in the franchise came in 2006, and since then, fans have been waiting for the third part. After lots of ups and downs, it was finally announced a few months ago but before the dream could come true, Paresh Rawal has backed out from the film.
Priyadarshan's Hera Pheri 3 has been among the most highly anticipated films in 2025. In separate events, all three lead characters confirmed their part in the movie and the OG trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal were even seen together leaving the airport a couple of months ago. However, the joy and excitement were short-lived because a recent report by Bollywood Hungama revealed that Paresh Rawal has opted out of the upcoming film.
A source close to the new portal shared that Paresh Rawal allegedly had some creative differences with the makers of the film. When neither of them was able to align things, the actor decided to step down for the significant project. Later, when they reached out to Paresh for confirmation, he agreed that the news was indeed true. In his words:
"Yes, it's a fact."
Paresh Rawal's role as 'Baburao' has a special place in the hearts of audiences, but as an actor, it limited his on-screen image in multiple ways. While some actors yearn to play such iconic roles, Paresh wanted to get away from it. Just like he has often been asked about it in his interviews, Paresh was again asked about the cult character that he was set to play during his recent interview with The Lallantop. Sharing his desire to break free from it, he said:
“Woh gale ka fanda hai. Main 2007 mein Vishal Bharadwaj ji ke paas gaya tha. 2006 mein part 2 release ho gayi thi. Maine kaha mere paas ek film hai, mujhe iski jo ek image hai na, usse chhutkara chahiye. Same getup ke andar alag kisam ka role. Woh aap kar ke de sakte hain mujhe. Jo bhi aata hai, uske andar Hera Pheri hai. Main actor hoon yaar, mujhe phasna nahi hai iss daldal mein."
The news of Paresh Rawal's exit spread like wildfire on the internet, and netizens took to reddit to share their dismay over the news. Some felt it was a PR stunt, while others saw it coming. One netizen penned, "Was bound to happen. He hates the character." Another user wrote, "They have already shot the announcement video. It will be shown in the IPL final. So, it's a rumour to get attention on this topic." Many fans also demanded that the film shouldn't be made without him, and a fan commented, "It will be better not to make this movie. If any of those three actors are not a part of the film, then it will be a huge disaster."
