Paranthu Po offers a completely new vision to Ram's usual filmmaking style, presenting a gentle yet humorous ride alongside a middle-class family, with a fire to pursue their dreams. The film is simple, with the narrative revolving around an eight-year-old boy, 'Anbu'. However, don't be mistaken by the simplicity of the story, as sometimes the most common tales are the ones that surprise you the most.

'Anbu' is a young boy from a Chitlapakam apartment in Chennai. While he has every material comfort a parent could ever give their child, he struggles with restlessness. His father, 'Gokul', runs an organic foods business, while his mother, 'Glory', is away at a saree expo. The loneliness eating into his little mind, 'Anbu' is left on his own to wrestle with a deeper sense of yearning.

Paranthu Po is a charming blend of bizarre humour and subtle life lessons about self-discovery

The film starts with a striking aerial shot of the apartment complex, giving the viewers an idea of the luxury 'Anbu' has enjoyed. However, the flats are built over an encroached lake, which acts as a symbol of the fragility of the working-class dreams. The two contrasting realities soon introduce us to our lead, 'Anbu', whose overly busy parents try to satisfy his constant desires, but there is something off, as nothing seems to do the trick.

No parent has ever given up on their child, and 'Anbu's' parents are no different. So, in an attempt to understand his son, the doting father, 'Gokul' takes 'Anbu' on a road trip to the suburbs where they encounter several quirky yet memorable characters, including 'Emperor' an old man with a heart nobler than any king, 'Dharma' a little boy who climbs trees and calls on birds with different sounds and 'Vanitha' the long lost crush of 'Gokul'. The viewers are also taken on a ride into 'Anbu's' internal journey, which is filled with dreams of flying, dinosaurs, and far-off lands.

The film's humour lies in the simple and relatable dialogues, which are often accompanied by a song. Paranthu Po also delves into issues like caste, religion, and class, but these themes are woven into the fabric of the story without feeling heavy-handed. The film has the effect of a bedtime story one could revisit at any age, with lessons hidden in small yet hilarious wonders of an auto driver's plight of a helpless woman, a father's hilariously witnessing his child's 'no smoking' campaign and a poor homeless man buying food for his 'rich' guest. The film is truly endearing with the motto that kindness shown is always returned.

Netizens react to the film, Paranthu Po

Netizens have been loving the film since it was initially released. A user penned, "One of my biggest takeaways from Parandhu Po was the relationship between Gokul and Glory. They’ve been married for 10 years, have an 8-year-old son, and still, they can’t stop talking, updating each other about their lives, even when they’re not physically together. Just Ram things." Another wrote, "Who would've thought Ram to team up with an actor like Shiva and give a movie like Paranthu Po. So heartwarming, poignant and funny. Cinema."
