Darshanam Mogilaiah, a master of the Kinnera, was a figure of immense cultural significance. His soul-stirring performance in the Tollywood movie, Balagam, brought him immense fame and recognition. Hailing from Telangana, Mogilaiah was one of the few surviving artists who had mastered the string instrument called Kinnera. His skill on the instrument was so profound that he was often referred to as Kinnera Mogulaiah. For those unfamiliar, Kinnera is a stringed instrument that closely resembles the veena.
There is nothing as unpredictable as life. Darshanam was a star performer who was part of Balagam films and a master of Kinnera. He was undergoing treatment for his kidney-related ailment at a private hospital in Warangal. However, destiny has its own way, and the ace performer succumbed to death on December 19, 2024.
The entire nation was in shock after the news broke. Darshanam was among the few last ones to withhold the legacy of folk music and kinnera and promote it globally. The industry incurred a huge loss after his death, and his contribution to the industry will always be cherished. In 2022, Darshanam was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri for his skillfulness in playing Kinnera.
As Darshanam passes away, his second son, Mahender, will be keeping his legacy alive. The latter had already accompanied his father in his later years to play the kinnera during various cultural programs. The state government, recognizing the importance of Darshanam's contributions, has pledged to allocate land for the construction of his house, a significant gesture of support for the preservation of our cultural heritage.
He also sang a part of the title song for Pawan Kalyan’s film, Bheemla Nayak, a significant contribution that not only showcases his musical talent but also his commitment to preserving his father's legacy. Reportedly the movie’s director, Venu along with the crew as well as the State Government supported his medical expenses as he suffered from the prolonged kidney ailment all this while.
