Om Puri's Final Years Were Pathetic And Tragic, Cleaned Dishes At 'Dhaba' As A Teen, Recalls Seema

Om Puri was one of the most loved actors who appeared in the mainstream commercial films. The multi-talented actor worked in films across Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, English, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu, and Marathi languages and is regarded as one of the world's finest actors. Still, his final days on earth were marked by hardship and humiliation.

Seema Kapoor opened up about Om Puri's final days before passing

The late actor, Om Puri was married to Seema Kapoor for approx 3 years. Although their turbulent relationship was short-lived, Seema remained by Om's side in his final years. During a conversation with Galatta India, the writer revealed that they had reconnected after he suffered from health concerns and was being legally cornered by his second wife. She revealed that she forgive him once he apologised.

During the conversation, Seema Kapoor reflected on Om Puri's hardships during his final years. Seema revealed that the last 10 years of his life were extremely tragic. She added that he had worked so hard during his youth, yet in his final years, people backed out to pay his fee when he was admitted in FTII. She was quoted as saying:

"The last 10 years of his life were very tragic. He didn’t deserve it. He had worked so hard in his life. He had struggled without compromising on his ideals. He never had any support in his youth. He would cycle to school, he cleaned dishes in a dhaba. Somehow, someone promised to pay his fees when he was admitted to the FTII, and then, at the last moment, they backed out. And yet he managed to pull through, and he eventually made a name for himself internationally."

Seema Kapoor recalled Om Puri apologised to her

In the same conversation, Seema Kapoor revealed that she never made her martial issues with Om Puri public, and quietly left him. She added that she forgave him when Om asked for forgiveness. She further stated that she never slandered him and doesn't see a reason to do so now that he can no longer even defend himself. She also shared how Om suffered a paralytic attack during his second marriage, which is what prompted him to make amends with her.

Seema Kapoor opened up about Om Puri's regressing health in the final years

During the same conversation, Seema Kapoor revealed that Om Puri had found himself entangled in some legal issues towards the end of his life. She added that when he recovered he told her how he was unsure about how he will survive his twilight years. However, her brother, Annu Kapoor warned her that Om was only looking for someone to take care of him. She was quoted as saying:

"When he recovered, he told me that he was insecure about how he’d survive his twilight years, because he wasn’t being taken care of. My brother, Annu Kapoor, warned me to be careful, and that he was only looking for someone to look after him like a nurse. Because of his poor health, he became depressed, and he would take pills for it."

Seema Kapoor further stated that Om Puri was not a calculative man. She claimed that he deserves sympathy not criticism as his final years were extremely heartbreaking. She also admitted that he deserved far more than being categorised alongside rapists and murderers in the court. She was quoted as saying:

"He deserves sympathy, not criticism. What he went through in the final 10 years of his life was pathetic, tragic, heartbreaking. He was made to go to court, and made to rub shoulders with murderers and rapists. Imagine what he must have gone through."
