Indian billionaire, Mukesh Ambani's wife, Nita Ambani is a businesswoman, philanthropist and a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. The director of Reliance Industries and the chairperson-founder of the Reliance Foundation and Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Nita has performed many essential roles in various fields, including healthcare, education, sports, arts, and culture. Nita Ambani was also selected as a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2016, becoming the first woman from India to get appointed in the role.

However, not many know that Nita Ambani had expressed her desire to see the biggest sporting event in the world, the Olympics, take place in India about two decades ago. Yes, you read that right. Recently, we got hold of a video of Nita giving an interview on Doordarshan Sports during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, wherein she manifested bringing the IOC to India. She was heard saying:

“It is my wish that in the years to come, there will come a day when we will witness the Olympic ceremony take place in our country, and this day surely will come.”

Nita Ambani brought the International Olympic Committee to India after 40 years

Fast forward to today, Nita Ambani made India proud as she brought the International Olympic Committee to India after 40 years. On October 15, 2023, the Ambanis hosted the 141st session of the IOC at the prestigious Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. Many celebrities gathered at the NMACC to celebrate the achievement. However, it is yet to be seen if India will bag the hosting rights for the 36th Summer Olympics and Paralympics, as the IOC will make the decision somewhere around 2026 or 2027.

However, Nita Ambani finally created history on Day 2 of the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai. For the unversed, cricket, along with four other sports, including baseball/softball, lacrosse, flag football and squash, became the five additional sports for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Expressing her excitement over the same, Nita Ambani had said:

“As an IOC Member, a proud Indian and an ardent cricket fan, I am delighted that IOC members have voted to include cricket as an Olympic sport in the LA Summer Olympics, 2028. It’s truly a day of great joy and jubilation. Cricket is one of the most loved sports globally, and the second most watched. For 1.4 billion Indians, cricket is not just a sport, it’s a passion!”

When Nita Ambani looked after the preparation for the 141st International Olympic Committee session

On October 12, 2023, a fan page of the Ambani family shared a video of Nita Ambani, wherein she looked after the then-ongoing preparations for the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee at NMACC. In the video, Nita also talked about India hosting the IOC committee, calling it a happy moment for the country. Expressing her excitement about India hosting the IOC session after 40 years, Nita had said:

"We all will welcome all the delegates from all over the world to our city, Mumbai. We will be hosting the Olympic session in India after 40 years at NMACC. It is such a happy moment to welcome delegates from over 80 countries. I think let's keep the Indian flag flying high. On behalf of all Indians, a big swagatam to all the delegates. Jai Hind!"
